I have obtained the death certificates of William Ferguson and Ann Ferguson née Robertson and it gives the following information.
Ann Ferguson, married to William Ferguson, farmer, died on 30 May 1866 11 am at Hillhead, (Cairneywhing, Tyrie, New Pitsligo, Tyrie, aged 58. Her father was George Robertson, shoemaker Master, deceased. Her mother was Margaret Robertson, maiden surname Laurie, deceased. She died of consumption after being ill for 18 months. She’d had no immediate medical attention. The informer was her widower William Ferguson, who was present in the house when she died.
William Ferguson, feuar, ,widower of Ann Robertson, died on 8 June 1878 at 3 am in New Aberdour, aged 75. His father was William Ferguson, farmer, deceased. His mother was Margaret Ferguson, maiden surname Burgess, deceased. William died of disease of the groin (softening), as certified by J Collinstead. The informer was his son, John Ferguson, who was present in the house when he died.
A feu originally meant feudal land held by a vassal in return for grain or money. In more recent times it came to mean a holding in which the vassal had exclusive possession and use of heritable property in return for feu duty to a superior. So a feu meant land held in perpetuity in payment of a yearly sum.
A feuar is a person who holds land in feu. The concept of feudal tenure was only abolished in Scotland in 2000.
Entry in parish register for Gamrie and Macduff, Banffshire, Scotland. William Ferguson Grieve at Afforsk and Ann Robertson Cushnie were married on 6th Dec 1835 before witnesses. ( a name crossed out) the Church Session. See file already sent.
In this context, a grieve was the overseer or head-workman on a farm. The farm was probably the Wards of Afforsk in the parish of Gamrie, less than 1 km from Cushnie, which was the place where Ann lived.
This is not my family. I have obtained the information for a friend and am posting it here to help others. Lesley

In the 1841 census Jane Leith, 80, is with Wm Ferguson, 70, and Margaret Ferguson, 60.
In the New Deer cemetery we have the MI on stone no. 61, kindly transcribed by Carol: Erected by William Ferguson farmer in Crossgeight in memory of his spouse Margaret Burges d. 13 Sept 1841 aged 64, their son Hugh d. 29 Aug 1830 aged 19. Above William Ferguson d. 1 June 1842 in 73rd year. His mother-in-law Jane Leith d. 4 Jan 1846 aged 88
I read recently that mother-in-law in a Scottish census could mean mother of spouse or step-mother. So Janet Leith could be the mother of Margaret Ferguson m.s. Burgess OR the second wife of the father of William Ferguson (ca 1771 - 1 June 1842).
Leith could be Janet's maiden surname or surname by an earlier marriage. It is normal for Scottish records to use the maiden surnames of married women. Although this is not usually done in census records, I have come across examples there.
Please let me know if you solve this problem. I'd also like to know where the name Bartlet entered the family. And any other MIs for this family would be appreciated.
Regards Lesley
