Prestons in Great Bircham, Docking & Shernborne
« on: Thursday 19 February 09 17:19 UTC (UK) »

Could anyone help me?  I believe Rayner Preston born 1786 in Docking and John Preston born 1789 in Shernborne are brothers but can find no real evidence.

Hi and welcome to RC.

http://freereg.rootsweb.com/cgi/Search.pl

ssearch 1780 - 1795 in Norfolk/ prestons we find:

John preston b.7/10/1787  chr.11/10/1787 shernborne
father: Robert Preston
Mother grace Skipper

also sister Mary preston b.7/5/1786  chr 10/5/1786 shernborne same parents

no sign of Rayner . dates fo John ie earlier than you had would suggest rayner not same family.
where did you get info from?

Norfolk transcription service seens to be offline at moment or would check there.

Many thanks for the info.  It agrees with mine but I did not know the date of Mary Preston.  John Preston moved to Sawbridgeworth and became a Land Bailiff finally living to a great age and dying in Edmonton.  I have printed out all the marriage registers for Norfolk but have drawn a blank to Robert Preston and Grace Skipper.  When we were in Great Bircham we found five gravestones (how lucky we were!) all lined up together and all belonging to the Prestons, Humphreys and Harrisons.  The Great Bircham windmill was owned by a relative so I know we have the right Rayner Preston and John Preston but as yet no connection.  The name Rayner Preston comes down both sides until the 20th Century.  Any other info would be appreciated.  There must be the final part of the jigsaw somewhere.

Yes, possible and I have looked into Rayner as a last name.  Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

Hi Saracosa

I have only recently discovered this website and I am interested in finding more information re Prestons of Great Birchip.

From my knowledge, Humphries and Harrisons married Rayner Prestons, and they are my great great and great great great grandparents.

From stories told of the family by my grandparents, regarding an Irish connection, we seem to come to a dead end on this.

Believe illegitimacy maybe a reason for this gap, are you able to shed any light on this?

Regards AnnaG
