Another thought....for all relatives old or young enough to have served in the Boer War and World Wars...search the records on line...you can learn a lot about what happened to them and who were their next of kin and what were their professions. Anyone else want to pitch in?  Best wishes from a Great Clifton descendant.  Lumber-Jack

Shadrach S (Sparks) Charlton :Victory and British Medals Roll b Royal Field Artillary/284 page 36799 regimental # 188858 rank Dvr  he was a horseman by trade.

You should get the details from Kew but his complete Short Service Record is available  on line at a well known genealogy database provider specialising in Ancestors beginning with "A"! There is just too much to summarise here....names and addresses, physical attributes, postings, next of kin etc etc. I am sure the other boys are here too.

Check the Medal Rolls files too.

John Charlton Campaign 1914-15
RFA Dvr ( driver) Regimental # 21626
RFA A/Bar 21626
Victory medal RFA 138B 7446
British medal RFA 138B 7446
5Star RFA//A/B2102

Dead ( at least it seems to read that way....sorry)

I do not know if this is one of your John's. This is from a medal roll card and I cannot find a Short Service record to match it.
I am listing it here because he may have joined as a driver in the RFA with brother Shadrach. You would have to check this out at Kew.
I can find no other war records for Jacob or Joseph S.....others might.

Thanks Geoff! Setmurthy it is. And Shadrach Sparks is the corrected name of one son. To move forward now that we know the names and dates of birth of the children, the various BMD files and enumeration/voter lists may yield some info. I have to walk the Westies now. Lumber-Jack

That's it, I have run out of steam and databases! Remember to look up Shadrach's war short service record. Best of luck....Lumber-Jack

thanks for youe efforts at least i have a wee bit more i did not know about their service records i  think william had a son fletcher who died 1954 or 56 i think ann and john had similar backgrounds working outside it would be a hard working life for them similar to my own upbringing i am the eldest of 8 and not 2 of us were born in the same house either dad went from farm to farm wherever he could get work and some of those farmers were very tight fisted there was nothing for them when they came back after serving in the army and dad was a prisoner of war for a couple of years csc

Remember that in the 1841 census the ages were rounded so Jane at 40 in 1841 would have been  10 in 1811 for Christopher's birth. But if she was 44 in 1841 (rounded down by the census enumerator to 40)  she would have been 14 in 1811 or 15 in 1812. Pushing it I know but possible among folk at this time. I do not by any means discount your second wife theory, as this was common too especially with high death rates due to poor sanitation and childbirth. How did you get Christopher born in 1810 or 1811?  Is it an accurate date? L-J

The 1811 baptism of Christopher names his mother as Jane HETHERINGTON.

The IGI has an 1827 marriage of a John CHARLTON to a Jane REA at Stapleton.

Of course, I can't say if it was the same John CHARLTON.
