Edward John Loverock of Matlock
« on: Thursday 19 February 09 19:48 UTC (UK) »

We are trying to find photos that might contain an Edward John Loverock, born about 1922. Eddie was killed in a Lancaster bomber that crashed on 18th February 1943, he was one of the Sergeant Air gunners on Lancaster W4270 and is the only one of the crew that we do not have a portrait of. The crew are remembered on a memorial erected next to the Church in Staunton in the Vale by the villagers, close to where the crash happend. It is also hoped to publish a book about the crew hence the desire to find a photo.
Before joining the RAF Eddie was well known as a vocalist and as a competitor at musical festivals at Buxton, Chesterfield, Sheffield and Winster amongst other places. He won many certificates and medals. He also sang with the All Saint's church choir, and worked for the Post Office.
As well as singing, Eddie was a keen sportsman, he played for the Matlock Bank Church Institute in the Matlock Table tennis league. He had been a boy scout in Matlock's 5th Troop, then the Matlock squadron of the ATC he was also a member of the Liberal club.
Eddie had therefore likely been photographed on several occasions, we would be eternally grateful to anyone who could help track down his photo, there must be one out there waiting to be found.

A suggestion.  If you are not local to the Matlock area why not contact the following local newspapers for help in your search.   Their websites are:-

(1) The Matlock Mercury - www.matlockmercury.co.uk - this is published weekly.

(2) The Derbyshire Times - www.derbyshiretimes.co.uk - this is based in Chesterfield, published weekly but covers Peak District news including the Matlock area.

(3) The Peak Advertiser - www.peak-advertiser.co.uk - this is a free newspaper, based in Bakewell, produced fortnightly, it is delivered to thousands of households throughout the Peak District.  This paper publishs a lot of articles on history of the Peak District.

These three papers cover a very large area, and you never know, you might be lucky.

Good luck with your search.

All good ideas Margaret, Originally papers were contacted and were of a small amount of help, this was a couple of years ago though so it is time to do so again as there is a little more information that might help. I had not known of the Advertiser, so we can include that one. We are receiving some help at the moment from a Lady involved with the Matlock history society, I think and she has been of great help and is still looking.
Thanks for the ideas,

There is also another newspaper you could try that is sold in the Matlock area - the Derby Evening Telegraph, published daily at Derby, except for Sunday.   In the Monday edition there are included eight pages of ByGone Derbyshire, and one page every night afterwards.  The editoral staff welcome queries like you are asking.

There are two websites that might be able to help as well.

(1) John Palmer's Wirksworth Parish website www.wirksworth.org.uk    and

(2) htt://www.andrewspages.dial.pipex.com/matlock/quick.htm

Success, your suggestion to try a notice in the Peek Advertiser paid off Margaret. Within 24 hours of the letter appearing a Lady got in touch with us. She had about to be Engaged to Eddie when the accident intervened. She provided three photos of him for us to copy and add to the collected data.
Many Thanks,
