Mary Nolan in 1851 is a servant living in Cheetham Lancs born in 1832 and says her place of birth is Ireland Staplestown , Kildare. She's the right sort of age and marries in 1853 in Chorlton. Only she is Mary Nowlan and gives birth (when she registers) in 1857 as Nowland. Without taking out a mortgage given the very high fees for on line searches in Ireland with a name like Mary No (w)lan can anyone point me which is the most likely option for her birth and that this entry in1851 is indeed her?

Assuming you have her marriage certificate from Chorlton, you presumably know her father's name. Next, working on the hypothesis that the 1851 servant you have found may be her, you need to establish which parish records you need to look at.
The townland database at www.seanruad.com confirms that Staplestown is in the civil parish of Ballynafagh. The map here: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/civilparish/index.cfm?fuseaction=GetMap&CityCounty=Kildare shows that Ballynafagh civil parish is in the north of the county. If Mary was Catholic (look and see what sort of church she married in) compare the map of civil parishes above with this map of the Catholic parishes: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/counties/rcmaps/kildarerc.htm We can then see that Ballynafagh civil parish is within the Catholic parish of Clane - and when you hover over the map, you'll see that the Catholic parish of Clane is also known as Rathcoffey or Staplestown.
Now go to the online database: http://kildare.brsgenealogy.com/index.php?&set=yes Go to 'Sources' - you'll see that the Catholic records for that parish are listed under the name 'Clane' and start in 1821. Now go to the search page - once you get past the initial search, boxes for Father's name and Parish / District appear. Use these to narrow down your search - whilst there appear to be 22 Mary Nowlans and 12 Mary Nolans baptised in Co. Kildare close to 1832 (although seemingly no Nowlands). None of these appear to be in either Clane Catholic or Church of Ireland parishes. However, if you know her father's name, experiment and see how many of the options county-wide have a father's name that matches, then play around with father's name and the parishes and see if anything nearby comes up. If you still draw a blank, bear in mind that not all records are online yet - from what I can see the neighbouring Catholic parish of Robertstown doesn't appear to be covered by the online database and is only available at the National Library of Ireland.
Good luck! Richard.

Thank you for that. Mary was definitely catholic (married twice in English Catholic chapels). I'll let you know how I get on. Is there any sign of a James Baker (father Anthony) round there? That was her first husband who was Irish but he with his family were firmly based in Birmingham and I have always surprised that they met and married in Manchester unless they were related/friends from way back when.

There's only one James Baker baptism with father Antony (spelt without the h) in the Ireland-wide search - and he's in Kilcullen Catholic parish in Co. Kildare in 1818 - I don't know if that's too early to be your one. Kilcullen isn't immediately near to Staplestown, but it's not a million miles away either. Do you know Mary's father's name?

Yes It's James and he is a miller. He;s definitely dead in 1862 but in 1853 possibly not. That James sounds too old. He is 20 in 1851 (shame all the other census entries for the whole family and indeed Mary until she dies is Ireland)! Hence why I'm not sure whether that entry in Cheetham in 1851 is her or not. If only IFHS has a subscription option rather than the 5 euros a time option... (There's three others I've got to fins as well -one of whom has an even more common name than Mary Nolan!)
