Loftus from Co. Mayo

Hello all,

Can anyone help with the following marriage records in Mayo?

Daniel Loftus and Honora Coyne (probably around 1820)

Daniel's sons:

John Loftus (Born c. 1827) Mayo and Mary Mc Andrew

Patrick Loftus (Born c. 1830)  Mayo and Elizabeth McGuire.  Elizabeth died and Patrick then married Honor Mc Andrew.

Mary and Honor's parents were John Mc Andrew and Bridget McKenna

There is no record of Daniel and Honora ever leaving Co. Mayo but the 2 sons emigrated to Glasgow which is where I have found some information from bmd records.

The marriages of the sons would probably be late 1840's or early 1850's as there are records of children being born in Glasgow in the late 1850's.

Any help would be much appreciated.

not a very common name in Ireland -

In Pigots Commercial Directory of Ireland, 1824 I only see one Loftus entry in Connaught.

Ballina, Co. Mayo

  Stephen Loftus, Bridge-street - Skin Dealers (and hardware)

There's a few McAndrew entries in Mayo - including 2 in Castlebar

Stephen is listed at the same address in Ballina in 1846 as a Butcher.
In 1846 there's an Attorney named

  Thomas McAndrew, Knox st - Baliina.

Griffiths Valuation taken 1840s/1850s shows quite a lot of Loftus including some Daniels - you can check the indexes here: http://www.failteromhat.com/ by using the drop down menu in census/directories.  Your Daniel may still be alive around that time.

You could try cross referencing the surnames you have to see if there is any common place.

Sandgrounder1 The surname Loftus is very common in Mayo even today.
  In the Parish Kilgarvan  which covers a very wide area. and Ballina.
             If you take a look at www.leitrim-roscommon.com  you will see just how common the name is.
                      I have Loftus myself.

Hello again

I have just been looking through previous research paperwork and may have found a clue to where my Loftus family came from.

In the 1881 census for Glasgow,  Ann Duffy (nee Loftus) is said to be born in "Balihoo, Ireland"
Unfortunately I can only access a transcription, not the original document.  Is this an actual place in Ireland (most likely in Co. Mayo) or can anyone suggest what the actual name of the town/district might be?

Hi the link is well out of date now. I have no Loftus that went to England to live or Scotland.On the census you have for Scotland for Ann the place may be Ballindoo the parish is Kilturra it is on the Mayo-Sligo boarder on the road to Doocastle. Lep.
