On the 1861 Census, it shows Robert Winning, Head (Age 42) & wife, Ann Winning (Age 35) + sons: Robert (Age 7), John (Age 5) & Alfred (Age 3).

It states Robert (senior) as occupation = Engineer

However, on son, Robert's birth certificate (b.1854) it states that his father, Robert - his occupation was "Engine Driver".

Thank-you for the other info. I saw the register of Death for Robert Winning, dated 1865.  Does a Death Certificate give much more info ?

Not really - it'll tell you what he died from and who registered the death but I don't think it would give any clues as to his marriage to Ann.

There's a bit of a difference between engineer and engine driver, isn't there? His occupation should also be on his death cert, of course. Engine driver could explain why he moved about a bit - but, then, so could engineer!!  Undecided

You still haven't said where the 1861 census says Robert was born? Don't suppose it was Scotland?
