Sarah Western c 1828
« on: Friday 20 February 09 17:37 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

I am having difficulty finding records for Filkins which I belive is in Oxfordshire.  FreeReg don't even have Oxfordshire listed.

I am looking for baptism records of Sarah Western  born about 1828  who gave her p.o.b. as Filkins.

I know nothing about her except she married George Powell around 1861, in Cheltenham area, so any further information would be gratefully received.

Thank you.

In 1851, she is a servant in the household of William R Coxwell, in Gloucestershire.

Ref: HO107/1972/131/36

Her birthplace is given as Felkins, Oxfordshire.

I have just checked on Filkins and found that it is now in Gloucestershire so maybe you might do better searching the records for that county.

On the 1851 census it gives Felkins/Filkins as Oxfordshire and it is not very far south of Burford but presumably just across the border into the next county.

Cheers,

Hi Jen,

Just replied to  you and lost it all.

Thanks for your input, I agree about the boundaries and Glos seems to wobble about all the time.  Very confusing.

I have checked my findings on Sarah as I began to wonder if I had the right Sarah as in 71 and 81 she said she was born in Charlton Kings where they were living at the time.  In 1891 neither she or her husband knew where they were born but in 1901 at the age of 74 she remembered she was born in Filkins, Oxfordshire.

So, I still need the parish records for Filkins or thereabouts, to tell me who her parent(s) were.  In 1841 she is living in St Ebbe Oxford with Stephen and Susannah Houslow.  Are they a relative I wonder, they are considerably older than  Sarah as she is down as 9 and they are 50 and 49.

Anyway, I thank you for your interest.

Regards,
Elizabeth

I saw the 1841 with her as a nine year old but wasn't sure whether it was the right person. Could they be grandparents?

Bear in mind that they ( the adults) could have been older than it says in 1841..

Hi Jen,

I had thought of that too and found Susannah later on but Stephen was obviously dead by then.  I am having trouble wth the web tonight and it is very slow almost to a standstill, so I will come back to it later.  I think I  have gone through all this before as I am getting deja vu with the names.

Speak to you later,
Elizabeth
