Has anyone any information on a Maria CARTWRIGHT born ca 1864 in Lye?
She married Samuel Hill on 25 Dec 1863 in St Marks Stamber Hill; she was aged 19 living in Bott Lane, Lye at the time. No father is named on the marriage certificate. She was not living at Bott Lane in 1861 - I looked on the address search on findmmypast.
She & Samuel had 4 daughters that I know of from the 1891 [aged 27 living in Barley Mill Amblecote] & 1901 [aged 37 living at Bank Street Rowley Regis] & 1911 [aged 47 living at 28 New Town Lane Cradley Heath] censuses: Flossie 1884, Annie 1893, Doris May 1898 & Ruth 1902.
I have found one suitable birth Stourbridge 1864 Q1 6 c 198 but before I spend £7 on a certificate I wondered if any of you helpful rootschatters knew of her parentage? My suspicion is that either her father was not named on the birth certificate or that she married without his permission although I do not know at what age a woman could do that in 1883.

Have you made an error on dates???
Maria Cartwright b 1864?
yet married Samuel in 1863?
1883 the full age for marrying without parental cnsent was 21 -but many lied about their age

Whoops, sorry you are quite right, slip of the finger - they married 1883.
And it was 1881, 2 years before the marriage, that she was not living in Bott Lane of course.
