Bromsgrove Workhouse
« on: Saturday 14 February 09 10:29 UTC (UK) »

My ancestor, George Dallow, is known to have been a member of the committee for the board of guardians for the Bromsgrove workhouse.
He held this position in the later years of his life & I know that he died in Catshill, Bromsgrove in 1930.
Does anyone have any records for the Bromsgrove workhouse for the period between 1915 - 1930 from which they could tell me when he actually carried out his workhouse duties please?
Any help would be most appreciated.
Thank you.

Hello Treefan

Have you looked at this site http://users.ox.ac.uk/~peter/workhouse/
(just enter Bromsgrove in the search box)

According to this, Worcester records office hold Bromsgrove guardians minute books 1836-1930

I've used WRO to look at workhouse registers, but beware, you can't see the actual registers if there are entries relating to people that are less than 100 years old. This is a real nuisance as you have to get the staff to search, and sometimes that's difficult as they lack the detailed familiarity of the families you're searching for, and even more so if the family has assumed names.

Having said that, it's a nice place, especially on a sunny day.
