Gravestone Look up Westray
« on: Tuesday 15 September 09 03:43 UTC (UK) »

I wonder if anyone would be able to check for a gravestone for Stewart Burger (nee Foules), who died sometime between 1841 census and December 1842, when her husband George Burgar remarried. For the 1841 Census she was on Papa Westray with her family, but the family moved back to Westray before 1851 Census. In 1851 the family were living in the Crowly House (not sure where that is/was), and George was farming a 3 acre holding. There is no gravestone on Papa Westray, so I thought she might be buried on Westray.

Had a look through Westray monumental inscriptions, no sign of Stewart Foules  any chance she was known by another name?

Thank you akc,
The only alternatives would be Burgar and variations on that, or variations of Foules (Fouls, Foulis, Fowles etc). She has no second name on the record. Possibly she was buried on Papa Westray but they could not afford a headstone at that time. I thought I would try Westray just to rule out that option.

She is on the 1841 census, but it's very hard to read apparently. The family are listed as residing in the Quarry House. George (husband), William, Anne and Margaret (children). Someone on Papa Westray has transcribed the entries on to a website for Papa Westray. I asked them to check as they had just a ? there. When it was checked they confirmed that it was her name. Interestingly, her daughter Margaret seems to be missing in the 1851 census of Westray on another site that I referred to, but maybe this is a transcription error.
Thanks for taking the time to help out. I really appreciate it.
