Margaret Flett b1845 Stromness
« on: Friday 20 February 09 20:44 UTC (UK) »

My GGrandmother was Margaret Flett and she married Joseph Deering and lived in East London. Margaret was born in Stromness, Orkney, Scotland in around 1845. I have been unable to find Margaret and Joseph's marriage certificate (I don't know if they married in England or Scotland) but after Joseph's death, Margaret re-married a William Burnop. I have this marriage certificate and her father is shown as John Flett (sailor - deceased). This wedding was on 22nd June 1913 and Margaret was 68.  I would like to find out anything about the Flett family..  How might Margaret and Joseph met when he was from East London?   I don't know if Margaret had any siblings or who her mother was.  Any info would be much appreciated. There is this birth on the IGI:

Margaret Harvey Flett, b. 2nd April 1845 at Stromness, daughter of John Flett and Margaret Goldie.

On the 1851 census, Margaret is staying with her maternal grandmother (surname of whom transcribed by Ancestry as "Gandee").

Address: Johnstone's Close (off Main Street), Stromness, Orkney
Sarah Gandee, head, 70, bed ridden, b. Evie
Jacobina Gandee, dau., 30, house servant, b. Evie
Margaret Flett, dau., 48, -, b. Evie
James G. Flett, grandson, 15, scholar, b. Evie
Margt H. Flett, granddaughter, 5, scholar, b. Evie

Father John is not present, but he could have been away at sea at the time of the census.

According to the IGI they married in England. On Margaret Harvey Flett,s birth cert she is the lawful daughter of John Flett, seaman & Margaret Goldie, she also has a brother James Goldie Flett lawful son of John Flett & Margaret Goldie. At the top of the page it says irregular baptisms!

Sorry.... but what does "Irregualr baptisms" mean.  Also is it usual to be called a "lawful" son or daughter?

Not sure what irregular baptisms are but I thought some of the regulars on rootschat might be able to enlighten us, I,m not a relative of Margaret Flett, just a nosey Orcadian. Goldie is not a common name in Orkney, although Fletts are all over the place.

On the 1881 census Joseph is at Bishopgate St, Middlesex with Margaret aged 36 born in Stromness, Joseph 13, Jane 7, and Walter J  aged 4.

On 1871 census he is in Tower Hamlet, London occupation wine porter aged 24 with Margaret aged 25 ( wine porters wife ) Joseph aged 3., and Margaret 11 months.

It looks like they married in the probable late 1860,s, but not in Orkney.

Been doing a little bit more looking and found on the igi Margarets parents: John Flett born about 1802 Stromness. Margaret Goudie ( sounds more like an Orcadian name than Goldie ) born about 1806 Stromness. Married on 15 March 1827. There children: John b 27 Oct 1832, James b 1835 and Margaret Harvey b 2/4/1835. Seems to be a big gap between James and Margaret so there are possibly more children in between.

Walter J (James) on the 1881 census was my Great Grandfather.  He married Agnes Fitzgerald (she's proving to be a real nightmare!) and they had 4 sons.  Walter - 1899, Joseph - 1902, William Ernest - 1904-1905, and my Grandad Henry Joseph 12th Jan 1901.

Thank you again for all your help

Yes please Jane, although I think I have them already.  Smiley

My problem with Agnes is....

Agnes Fitzgerald married Walter James Deering  on 1st June 1898 in Mile End.  The marriage certificate shows her as being 21 (he was 22) and her father was Thomas Fitzgerald (Deceased) - Porter.

I have Agnes on the 1891 cenus as a domestic servant to Frederick Malyon (I know this is her as he is one of the witnesses on the marriage certificate). In 1881 the person who I think is her is living with John Murphy - GDaughter.   Is G Daughter "God Daughter" or "Granddaughter"? I haven't found her living with her parents at all.  Also, the Fitzgerald family I think she belongs to shows both the mother and father being born in Ireland.... and I'm not sure where to go from here.
