On the IGI following some birth dates are numbers,eg Mary Anne McAleer birth 19 June 1865 0309 Fintona Tyrone Ireland
Parents James McAleer/Margaret Denny.
Can any one explain what the numbers mean?

Hello,

Yes , they are unusual, they do not appear on all tyrone or Irish records, only some.

There are several Mary Ann Macaleer born to a James  in Tyrone in 1865/1866  but it while it seems to have been used with other surnames it does not seem to appear in other listings.

Perhaps it is a transciber's coding of work done? Used to check if the transcription is questioned?

The explanation of the number (in this case 0309) is on the page under messages:
"The place listed is the county, registration district, and page number of the birth entry; it may not be the actual birthplace."
