I have in my tree a Samuel Butler born c1792 ? in Berkshire. I know he married an Ann b c1799 in Henley on Thames. Ann died in Henley c1883. I would love to find their wedding to find Ann's surname. I'm sure they married in Henley. Their first child Ellen Ann Butler was born in Henley c 1818/19 so I would guess her parents married around 1817/18. Other siblings followed:- Owen Thomas b c1819 in Great Marlow Frances Catherine b c1820 Great Marlow Henry B b c1821/22 but he was born in Thenford, Northants George b c1825/26 again in Thenford, Northants William Henry b c1827/28 in Henley (my paternal Gt. Gt. Grandfather) Emma b c1829/30 in Henley David b c 1830/31 in Thenford, Northants. Their father Samuel's occupation on the 1861 Census is listed as a White Smith. I have not found him or his family on any other Censuses. Any help with tracing the marriage or baptisms of the Oxfordshire family members would be much appreciated as I live in Essex and am unable to access local parish records. Many thanks. dawlc

Hi,
There is no marriage apparent in the Henley St Mary PR (courtesy of OFHS). Also there is no burial for Ann in either Henley St Mary or Holy Trinity.
Are you sure that the marriage and death were in Henley on Thames or did these take place in Henley Registration District ?
Addition:
William Henry BUTLER baptised Henley St Mary 7 Jan 1827, father Samuel (whitesmith), mother Anne. A note says he was born either Nov 5 or 9 (presumably 1826).

In 1851 it's just Samuel and Ann. Both shown as 50 and born in Henley. He's a journeyman Whitesmith. They're living in St. Alban's Road, Watford.

In both 1841 and 1851 they've been mistranscribed as "Butter" on Anc**try.

Many thanks to both Harry and Kenny - what a prompt and welcomed response to my questions. The answer is that I am not sure that Samuel and Ann(e) were married in Henley - this information was provided to me by a descendent of Frances Catherine Butler. I just presumed due to their first child being born in Henley but as Samuel is supposed to originate from Berkshire perhaps they married there? If they were living in 1841 in Reading perhaps that is where Samuel originated from? Or as Harry suggests - married in the Henley Registration District? It could be that their first child too was born in Great Marlow as the second and third were? Harry did you find an Ellen Ann Butler baptised in Henley c 1818/19? The next step presumably is to try the Reading/Berkshire link. Deborah.

Deborah,
I didn't find the baptism of Emma in 1818/19 (or any other timeframe) i'm afraid.
