Would anybody happen to know if there is an historical register of Oxford University graduates?
An ancestor, Charles Kidman Jones (1831-1883) is said to have been an Oxford graduate in chemistry, which I would very much like to verify.
Charles emigrated to Australia circa 1857, where he spent the remainder of his days.
Any assistance very much appreciated.

Hi
Unfortunately there's no sign of him in Oxford University Alumni (which goes up to 1886) either under K or J (I'm not sure whether the surname was KIDMAN JONES or just JONES with Kidman as a middle name - either way he is not listed). There are a few alumni called simply Charles JONES.
Sorry about that
Anna

According to IGI entries, Charles Kidman Jones is a child of William Bentinck Jones and Judith née Crowhurst. He and eight siblings were baptised at Deal in Kent, and one sister, Caroline at Dover
This seems to be Charles with some brothers and sisters in 1841 [no parents with them]
Deal, Kent
Caroline Jones 20 Emma Jones 15 Jane Jones 15 William Jones 15 George Jones 12 Charles Jones 10 Edwin Jones 5
They are all listed as born in Kent, and all (even Edwin!) bracketed together as 'grocer's apprentice'
The Origins 1841 census shows them, but I can't find them on Ancestry.

Thank you one and all,
'Kidman' was his middle name, rather than part of the surname, and he was indeed the son of William Bentinck Jones and Judith nee Crowhurst. Perhaps direct contact with Oxford Uni is the best step to take next.
One other curious story attached to him is that he was once the pilot of Queen Victoria's barge/barque, which allegedly sailed between Dover and Calais (all the Jones brothers having been mariners of one sort or another). I don't seem to be able to put any meat on the bones of this one, only doubt that such a vessel ever existed.
Regards,
PJ

Hi, Don't know how much further you have gone with Charles Kidman, but he married a great aunt of mine name of Mary Jane Rose from Guernsey. Won't go on, you may know all of this. If you need any more, let me know
