Hi again
In 1861 Buckland Brewer Orleigh Lodge Joseph DARK 31 ag lab Jane 24 glover Reuben 6 Thomas 4
Orleigh Lodge is on the page before the Hamlyns who are living at Bearah, which is most probably the name of the farm ... so joseph is not too far away from where he was residing in 1855.
will search some more

Hello Deb,
Thanks for that.
On Joseph and Jane's Marriage Certificate, no mention is made of Joseph's father's name. Would this have meant that he was illegitimate? If he was deceased, surely it would have mentioned this. Any ideas please?

I have looked on IGI and cannot find Joseph b c 1830
in 1841 ...this may be him with his family
Parkham cannot make out name of farm
Thomas Dark farmer 40 Y Miriam 38 Y Thomas 13 Y john 11 Y Joseph 7 Y ...his age still does not add up to b c 1830 Thirza 3 Y Ellen1 Y
'up the road at another farm' Joseph DARK farmer 35 Y rebecca 30 Y Mary 9 Y Louisa 7 Y John 5 Y / John Dark 15 Y
arrrgghhhhh
deb
added ...In the 1861 Joseph was b Parkham and Jane in Monkleigh

Hello again,
I don't think this is the Joseph in question. If you look back at my initial query, I have a copy of Joseph Dark's and Mary Pooley's Marriage Cert. dated 5 October, 1861. They were both residing in Woolfardisworthy. Thomas was named as Joseph's father. I think we ruled this Joseph out. It's getting very confusing again!

hi again
yep I am a little confused..
okay we have Anne Dark/t born 1862 who ends up marrying George Spiller ... her dad on marriage cert state Joseph Dark as her dad.
we then have a 1861 and 1871 census of Anne's parents ...Joseph Dark and Jane Arnold who married 1855. Joseph in 1861 staes he was born Parkham and jane Arnold was b Monkleigh.
so the Joseph age 7 with Miriam and Thomas is the Joseph who married Mary Pooley in 1861 and not Jane Arnold .....
arrgghh do I have this right ?

if you go to Genuki for Buckland brewer you find a directory transcript with this extract HAMLYN James, farmer, Thorne
HAMLYN Samuel, farmer, Barah
HARDING William, baker and shopkeeper
HARRIS Robert, farmer, The Barton
HAWKINS Richard, carpenter
HEAL Lawrence, farmer, Buda
JENKINS James, farmer, Ley
three hamlets are linked to BB but no Barah or variation so it does look like a farm name Trees

Hello again,
Thanks Deb USA and Trees for your information, it's much appreciated. I wonder where Joseph could have been at the time of the 1851 Census, he seems to have disappeared! I will see what more I can find on Jane Arnold and family Deb. Maybe that might shed some light.

Hi MMM
In 1841 Monkleigh Salterns Cottage
John ARNOLD ag lab Anna ARNOLD 15 Glover Eliza " 10 JANE 5
So it looks like her mum had already died...
The only IGI christening I can find is Eliza ARNOLD 5 feb 1832 Parents ; John Arnold and Ann
there is an IGI submitted entry for Jane but it states that her mum is Betsy ... which looks like someone has just submitted it from the info on 1851.

Just thinking out loud again ... His son was named Reuben , which to me sounds quite unique ...
I found this on IGI , extracted record
Christening; Reuben Squire DARK 11 Dec 1808 Bideford Mother; Susanna Dark
Cannot find anything else on him on IGI or on census records .... will look some more
