Dunwoody family
« on: Monday 23 February 09 11:23 UTC (UK) »

Hi all,
I am trying to find the birth record for my gt.grandfather John Dunwoody born in Dunbartonshire c. 1855. I don't know the names of his parents, so that would be a bonus too. He married Anne Eliza Bird in Lisburn Northern Ireland 19.04.1878.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Barry,

As Gadget has highlighted, the couple above are the only John Dunwoody showing up on the IGI - www.familysearch.org  in Dunbarton.

If they are your couple, couldn't find their marriage on the IGI.

However there appears to be 9 children born to the couple; - from the IGI

All born Kilmarnock, Dunbarton, Scotland.  All 'extracted' from records, which means they'd be available to download from the govt ppv site www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk - £6.00 min spend would allow for download of 5 certs   :O)

1.  Agnes Dunwoody b.  21 July 1837
2.  Andrew Dunwoody ch. 17 Nov 1839
3.  Mary Dinwoody16 Aug 1842
4.  Jane Morton Dunwoody b.  09 Jan 1845
5.  Ann Dunwoody b.  16 Apr 1847
6.  William Dunwoody b.  08 Sept 1849
7.  Margaret Dunwoody b.  27 Mar 1852
8.  John Dunwoody b.  13 May 1854
9.  David Dunwoody b.  08 Jul 1857

Of note is that John Dunwoodys name remains constant whereas his wifes name is variously spelt MaryAnn, Mary Ann, or Mariane and surname Battersby or 'bay'

Away to have a look for the 1841 census.

Regards,    Steve   :O)

Back off the free 1841 census at www.freecen.org.uk  - note where John and Mary Dunwoody are born   :O)

Address: Gartocharn  (Kilmarnock, Dunbarton)

Surname   First name(s)   Sex   Age   Occupation    Born
DUNWOODY   John              M   25   Blacksmith    Ireland
    DUNWOODY   Mary              F   25       Ireland
    DUNWOODY   Hellen            F   7       Dunbartonshire
    DUNWOODY   Agness          F   4       Dunbartonshire
    DUNWOODY   Andrew          M   1       Dunbartonshire
ASHCROFT   John   M   15   Apprentice Blacksmith    Dunbartonshire

As I see a Hellen - off to see if I can find her   :O)

Note from Scotlands People (SP):  Enumerators were instructed to round down the ages of persons 15 years and over to the nearest five years. Hence a given age of 28 would be recorded as 25, one of 63 as 60 and so on. If a person lied about their age, this, combined with the rounding down, could severely distort the actual age. You will find instances where enumerators did not adhere to this instruction on age and inserted the given age.

Hi Steve  Smiley

I'm not one for being pedandic but I think you might confuse Barry - the place in Dunbartonshire is Kilmaronock not Kilmarnock.

Ooops - silly me - thanks for the correction Gadget.   :O)   Just back off the IGI.

No sign of a Helen/Hellen birth to this couple - so maybe not recorded for whatever reason.  As no relationships shown on '41 census, could even be a niece.

Looked for a marriage worldwide for the couple on the IGI 1830 to 1840.  No luck.  So Barry.  Good luck with your searching......  Hopefully someone can pitch in with the '61 and '71 census.

Pre 1855 you won't get a birth cert for John in Scotland - you'll get an entry in the Parish Record which will give at least parents names.

If you register at:

http://www.ancestralscotland.com/  you'll get 10 credits for Scotlands People which will allow you to download the entry found by Gadget.  No spam for the site as I registered myself last year.   :O)

Nothing on the IGI for John, snr's  or Mary Ann's births or parents.

As they stated b. Antrim on the 1851 and we know their parents' names from the death certs, it would be worth putting a request on the Antrim board.

Hi Gadget and Piglet,
Many, many thanks for all that - I'm still learning!
John b.1854 went to Antrim where he married Anne Bird in 1878. Their son John b. 1881 was my grandfather. He went to London between 1911 and 1914 when he married my grandmother and joined the merchant navy. I'm following him up with their records. I will also try the Antrim board again, now that I have more names.
Thanks again
