John Mundie
« on: Monday 23 February 09 12:52 UTC (UK) »

Hi
Looking for any information on the parents of John Mundie born 9/01/1880 at Pitsligo Street, Rosehearty (Illegitimate)
Mother - Isabella Hepburn - General Labourer - Aged 39 in 1881 Census
Father - John Mundie - Cooper Journeyman - North Street Fraserburgh

Married Elsie Elizabeth Bruce in 1898.
Elsie's Parents - Margaret Laing (who died after her birth) and Alexander Bruce (Sandy).
Elsie was raised by her grandparents James and Elsie Laing of Fisherbriggs.

John and Elsie Mundie emigrated to Australia with their family in 1911.

Any information on any of the families will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Hi Noz,

What do you have already?  For example, John is Isabella's 3rd son according to the 1881 census.  She's a charwoman and has 3 boys - Henry Duncan aged 18, Charles Murdoch aged 8 and John aged 1.

I'll transcribe and go further back if you have nothing!

Hi Kenny,

There is a fourth son George Taylor who is 34 in 1901 Census.
l have the 1871, 1881, 1891,1901 Census's.
Also have possible 1841 Census on a John Mundie married to a Margaret Mundie who is a Cooper Journeyman and maybe an 1841 census on a Isabella Hepburn who is 18 with possibly a 6 day old daughter.

Any suggestions on how to clarify the 1841 Census information?

Thank you

Hi,

I don't think she's born until 1842.  I see her as being mistranscribed in 1851 as Isobel Hebron.  Birthplace of Pitsligo and resident in Rosehearty fits with subsequent census records.

In 1861 she's a 19 year old servant in the house of George Ewen in Pitsligo.

I think your John Mundie was born in 1849 to John and Margaret of Fraserburgh?  John Sr was a Cooper and I can see a son John in 1851 and 1861 (but frustratingly not in 1871!)

l did wonder whether the 1841 Census 6 day old may have been called Isabella Hepburn the same as her mother. Census place was also Pitsligo.
What are your thoughts?  But then Isobel Hebron also works.
John Mundie sounds good, if l could track them both down to birth certificates , could hopefully go further back then.

Hi

I'm convinced by the 1842 Isobel/Isabella.  The age and birthplace remain constant down the years (9 in 1851, 19 in 1961, 29 etc).

www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk would allow you to view the Old Parish Registers (didn't start formal BMD registration till 1855.)  Site's worth a look.

Happy hunting!

Couldn't resist looking myself - only costs a credit!

Isabella Agnes Hepburn was christened 12 Jul 1841 in Pitsligo, daughter of Noah Hepburn and Elspet Henry
