Restricted access SRO Ipswich Branch - Repairs to building
« on: Monday 10 August 09 11:38 UTC (UK) »

Here is a message I have received for the Suffolk Local History Council members, I thought it worth passing on in case anyone is planning to visit the SRO during the summer break.

Pat ...

Dear All

I thought that you would like to know that work to replace parts of the ceilings in the Education, Map and Microform Rooms, which are in a poor state of repair, will start on Monday 17th August.  Sections of damaged plaster will be removed and the lathes given three new coats of hair and lime plaster.  This work is due to be completed in early September, although progress is dependant on the prevailing weather conditions for how quickly the plaster dries between coats.  There will be no access to these rooms for several days whilst crash platforms are installed and the plaster is removed.  Thereafter we will have more limited access until the end of the project. We will remain open throughout and hope to start our programme of talks, courses, workshops etc as planned.

Some furniture, equipment etc will be moved on 12th-13th August in preparation for these works and to create a temporary microfiche viewing area, with slightly fewer machines. Three microfilm readers will be available in the Searchroom.  We are advising our customers to book a machine in advance of their intended visit to avoid disappointment.  Space in the Searchroom will also be a little more restricted.

Access to original archives will be unaffected, however some printed maps and reference books kept in the Education and Microform Rooms will be unavailable.  We are suggesting customers contact us to ensure the items they wish to see are accessible.

There will be fewer car parking spaces in the record office car park as some will be used for contractors’ vehicles and a secure compound.

I apologise for the short notice of this warning.  Property were not sure whether they would be able to fit the work in over the Summer as this is the time they normally reserve for school building repairs.  A start date was only agreed yesterday.  I also apologise for any inconvenience the building work causes to you or members of your organisations.

If you have any questions or comments or would like further information I suggest you contact Pauline Taylor, the Public Service Manager on 01473 584541 in the first instance, as she is most likely to have the up to date news.  (She has contact the Suffolk Family History Society separately.)

Best wishes
Kate

Just to say that my husband was on a course at the Ipswich RO last Saturday and the work there continues.

The Map Room is still completely off limits, and the large room where you would normally find fiche and film readers, and all the fiches and films, the Suffolk Family History Society library etc etc is still completely closed.

There are some fiche readers available in the lobby area until the work is finished.
