The lanlord would have lived over the pub I'd guess...apart from housing himself and family, providing Acommodation as it advertises, would need someone on site all the time..
Another interesting thought for Jan.

Thanks Brian
I had found most of that from census, BDM's etc. But it's nice to have it all in one place.

Hi Jan,  another old 'Lakenheathen' here, my family (the Morleys), have lived here in the village since the early 1600's  The Bell Hotel as you can see from Brian's photograph has now been closed down and is going through the process of being converted into flats much to the disgust of the locals I might add. The builders are planning to name the flat complex once completed 'Cromwell Mews' and again we locals are not amused as the name is based solely on the fact that the Bell's name was changed to the Cromwell Inn only a few years ago when the Pubmaster chain took it over. As Cromwell's men carried out malicious damage in the the church opposite the Bell back in the 1640's by cutting the faces and wings off the wooden angels as well as damaging the mediaeval wooden carvings on the pews we feel it really wouldn't be appropriate to name the flats after someone whose men committed such acts and it would be better to  name the new devlopment  'Bell Mews' or something along those lines.  The Bell was my old watering hole back in the Swinging 60's when we local 'Mods' congregated there almost every evening. There is supposedly a resident ghost in the Bell who lives, (if that's the right word),  in one of the hotel rooms upstairs. It appears  no-one has ever managed to stay in that particular room for a complete night before going and asking the owner to be moved to another room.  I only hope the eventual new flat owner who inherits the ghostly room doesn't get the heeby-jeebies. By the way Fincham is a good old Lakenheath name as indeed is Palmer in fact there are six related farming families by the name of  Palmer still living in the village.

Hello again Jan
I have dug out some photos for you 1. Pre 1915 as large tree in the centre was cut down that year, 2. 1950.
Regards
Brian W.

I hate to appear pedantic, but those cars in picture 2 are far too modern for 1950.  Enlarging photo 2 reveals a "V" number plate, which dates it to around 1976  Smiley

It was one of those senior moments when 5s and 9s look alike, the date should have been 1990, well spotted.

Hi I lived in that pub in Lakenheath for a couple of years when I was a child approx 1980- 1982.  My parents were the landlords.   I always believed it to have been called the "Bull" not the Bell.  It is however over 25 years since I was last there, Jan 1983.  The pub I lived in had at set of 3 stables out the back though by then it was not used for horses.  The garden at that time was in two parts.  The front end, was the public end, complete with swings and table.  The bottom end was a wilderness.  My father bought a goat to eat the grass, but it ate everything but.  The cellar of the pub was rumour to be haunted and it was certainly rather creepy down there, though I personally never saw or heard anything. Upstairs in the private quarters were long corridors.  The stair cases were very steep.
