WILLIAMS in Llanganow(?)
« on: Wednesday 25 February 09 02:34 UTC (UK) »

I am trying to find the parents of Sarah Williams, wife of Morgan Rees, who was born c1821 in what appears to be Llanganow (census information). Her father is named as Benjamin Williams and she had a sister Hannah born c1809. Sarah married Morgan Rees in 1841 in Newport Monmouthshire.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Kelly.

Hi Kells

Does it say what county Llanganow is in on the census, I ve had a look and the only place I can find is Llangan in Glamorganshire, I tried to find the census but there are to many Sarahs and Benjamins Williams for me to be sure.

Hi Lynne,

My mistake I omitted the county in my message! It says Pembrokeshire for both Sarah and her sister but the two place names were almost unreadable and from what I could see (and the Ancestry interpretation of it) it looked a bit like Llanganow, but I've not found that place either. Looking at the 1851 census page very closely it would appear the first letter is not an L as comparing it to other letters on the page in words like Liverpool and Leeds you can see it is something else, but what I really can't tell! The 1861 census is even worse and impossible to see her birthplace, but in this census her sister Hannah was in the household and looking at them both it almost appears the place name begins with a K(?) and there seems to be a g in the middle, possibly ending in w or d. Unfortunately there are black lines through both of them.
It is also hard with such a common surname. Thanks for having a look for me. If you or anyone can make sense of the place name that would be great!

Regards,

Kelly.

Hi Lynne,

I have copies as I'm not subscribed to Ancestry. The 1851 census for Morgan and Sarah Rees (she is wrongly named as Mary Ann) is in St. Woollos, Newport (Monmouthshire) and the folio is H.O. 107/2452 could be page 65 (shown in top corner) or 57 printed at the top of the page.
The 1861 census Morgan and Sarah are in the same town as 1851, the folio is R.G. 9/4019 Page 6.

I have tried to hand write the place as it looks and check a list of Pembroke parishes but I'm still not sure.

Thanks so very much for your help,

Kelly.

Hi Kelly

The only places I can find in Pembroke with the letter K is Kingsfold and Kingston.
Looking at the census I m like you not to sure.

Have you got them in the 1841 census. Do you know when Benjamin was born, or are the details from Sarahs marriage certificate.

Regards

Hi Lynne,

I've had a look through Pembroke parishes and wondered if it might have been Cilgerran which was also spelt with a K.  But it really is hard to see so I may never know. I've got nothing in the 1841 census, only info from Sarah's marriage certificate.

Thanks,

Kelly.

Hi Lynne,

It only says Labourer, not sure if that helps much! Sarah married Morgan Rees in Newport (Monm.) and it says Newport as the residence for them both.

Thanks,

Kelly.
