Sheffield Family Huttons Ambo/Malton
« on: Sunday 05 July 09 04:55 UTC (UK) »

 Surname Sheffield, Robinson, Sutton, Ward

~~~~~~~~
My family came from the Huttons Ambo/Malton Yorkshire area.
My direct ancestor was THOMAS B SHEFFIELD, b. 20 Jun 1797, Huttons Ambo, Yorkshire, England; d. 01 Jun 1858, Jasper, Steuben Co., Ny. He left Yorkshire for America about 1818/1819. He first went to Caldwell County, Kentucky and then settled in Steuben County, New York in 1828.
From what I've been able to piece together from IGI:
Thomas B Sheffield's father was WILLIAM SHEFFIELD - born 20 Jun 1762 in Huttons Ambo, Yorkshire, England, and died Sep 1838 in North Ridings, Yorkshire, England.
Thomas B Sheffield's mother was SOPHIA WARD. WILLIAM and SOPHIA SHEFFIELD married 31 Oct 1786 in Old Malton, Yorkshire, England. I have no idea what her birth date or place are.
Would it be possible to get a parish look up for their births/marriage and deaths?
IGI listed Thomas B Sheffield's siblings:
WILLIAM SHEFFIELD, b. 10 Sep 1787, Huttons Ambo, Yorkshire, England; d. Farmanby, Yorkshire, England. He married JANE BOWFIELD 07 Aug 1832 in Thornton Dale, Yorkshire, England. She was born 1788 in Thornton, Yorkshire, England, and died Mar 1879 in North Riding Of Yorkshire, United Kingdom. His occupation: Bet. 1815 - 1840, Surgeon
RICHARD H SHEFFIELD, b. 1789, Hutton Parish, England; d. 08 Nov 1870, Jasper, Steuben Co., NY; arrived New York in 1819.
ANN SHEFFIELD, b. 28 May 1790, Saint Michael, New Malton, Yorkshire, England
ELIZABETH SHEFFIELD, b. 17 Sep 1791, Saint Michael, New Malton, Yorkshire, England. She married WM ROBINSON 20 Feb 1819 in Saint Michael, New Malton, Yorkshire, England, son of WILLIAM ROBINSON and ELIZABETH. He was born 04 Mar 1786 in Saint Michael, New Malton, Yorkshire, England, and died Bef. 1870 in tuscarora, Steuben Co, NY. They arrived in New York with their children: Eliza Jane, Ann, Charles and Margaret in 1830.
SARAH SHEFFIELD, b. 11 Sep 1793, Saint Michael, New Malton, Yorkshire, England. She married ROBERT SUTTON 31 Oct 1818 in Saint Michael, New Malton, Yorkshire, England, son of ROBERT SUTTON and MARY. He was born 1790 in England, and died 1875 in malton, Yorkshire, England. Their children: Robert and Samuel Henry Sutton arrived in New York sometime between 1830 and 1850.
THOMAS SHEFFIELD, b. 25 Mar 1796, Huttons Ambo, Yorkshire, England.
SOPHIA SHEFFIELD, b. 20 Nov 1799, Huttons Ambo, Yorkshire, England. Arrived New York 1830. Never married.
HENRY SHEFFIELD, b. 19 Mar 1802, Huttons Ambo, Yorkshire, England.
CHARLES WARD SHEFFIELD, b. 01 Jun 1804, Huttons Ambo, Yorkshire, England.
WATKINSON SHEFFIELD, b. 27 Jul 1805, Huttons Ambo, Yorkshire, England.
Is it possible to find out if these really are all siblings of Thomas B Sheffield?
I would love to know exactly who William Sheffield's father was.  I found several IGI listings for a William Sheffield, son of William Sheffield in Malton/Huttons Ambo.  The dates seem to fit as William's direct ancestors.
I found a marriage record for William Sheffield and Anne Robinson 28 Sep 1760 Huttons Ambo.  My William was born or christened 20 Jun 1762, same location and his father was listed as William.  Could William and Anne be his parents?
I found another marriage record for a William Sheffield and Frances Thorp  11 Aug 1734 - St. Leonards, Malton.  I would think that the William who married Anne Robinson in 1760 would probably have been born around the mid 1730's or early 1740's, so could he be the son of William and Frances?
If anyone has info on this family, I would love to have it.
Regards,
Michelle Sheffield Florence
Hi
Have you though of getting the film of the registers to search at your nearest LDS family history centre?   They are worldwide so with luck there will be one fairly near.   Looking at the original might give several clues as they may mention occupation or address which will help to differentiate between families.
Where does the B come from as a middle name for Thomas?   What does it stand for?   It does not show in the IGI records you quote.
"North Riding" is an enormous area of Yorkshire which was divided into three Ridings then so it is not very helpful as a place of death.
The William who was a surgeon may have left a will so that might be worth looking for.  Pre 1858 wills are most likely to be found at the local archives office so would probably be at the Borthwick Institute in York.  Later ones are all held centrally at the main Probate office in London but copies can be ordered by post from York.   If you google "Wills" you will find the address and how to find the indexes - held at most main libraries and record offices.l
www.freebmd.org.uk should be a good site to look for deaths etc as the coverage at that time is good.   Malton is the district that covers Huttons Ambo so just looking there will bring up lots of Sheffield entries and you can widen it out to other places.  The only William Sheffield death in 1838 is in Whitby - over on the coast of North Yorkshire.  Jane died age 89 in Pickering district.
Hope that helps a bit!
I'm inspired to go to my local LDS family history center.  I've never been, but I've got high hopes that I'll make some new discoveries about my family.  As for the B. in Thomas B. Sheffield - I've got no earthly idea.  There are no other B's in the family line I've found so far, either first or last names.  He is continually referred to as Thomas B Sheffield in many primary sources.  Thomas' brother, William the surgeon, died after 1858.  I could try to order his will, will have to work on it.  I did find a biography reference to William Sheffield in a Thornton le Dale history book and the UK medical register for 1859 that said he was in practice before Aug 1, 1815.  I wonder if he was in the military, since he named his only child, a daughter, Horatia.
Thanks for your help!
