« on: Wednesday 25 February 09 10:20 UTC (UK) »

Was it possible or common for a 11 and 12 year old boys to travel from london to sydney by themselves in 1914

As im trying to work out if my relatives came over by themselves or with a family member as they didnt travel with there parents

Cheers

yes i guess as long as they had paid the fare they could travel,
aged 11 and 12 they wouldn't necessarily be in school and would be out working so if thats where the work took them, or maybe they had been sent on after appropriate adult had already gone.

generally
children under 5 though if with parent / adult weren't automatically named and were just listed as infant

Thanks

I have two boys listed on the same ticket. And i cant see their parents on the boat so i guess they did. It just seem very young to be travelling to another country by themselves but i guess things were different back then.

Cheers

If you think about world history, then it's very likely that the boys were sent to relatives in Australia for safe keeping, a lot of children were sent to Australia from England during war time.
They had their suit-cases, and name tags sewn onto their coats.
There are some very poignant stories told of child emigrants.
