John LOMAS
« on: Wednesday 25 February 09 11:14 UTC (UK) »

John Lomas is proving to be a very elusive chap.

So far I have him - in reverse order - dying in Filkins 21/8/1855.  In the 1851 census he was a constable in Fulbrook.  In 1841 he was a butcher in Filkins.   He married Elizabeth maybe about 1820?

According to the 1851 census he had been born in Colworth, Northants. in about 1798.  Wife Elizabeth was from Hatford Warwickshire and had been born about 1790.  I don't know where or when their marriage took place.

They had 2 children - John (b:1821, Oxon,) and Caroline (b:1826, Filkins).

Another mystery concerns his father John , snr.  A marriage in the Oxon MI is recorded for John Lomas (b:C1765,  Kensington) and Mary Tuckwell.   From Burford PR it seems the marriage took place at Burford on 10/11/1789.  Was he really born in Kensington?  What would have brought him to Filkins?

It's all rather bitty but if anyone can help unravel him it would be very much appreciated.

John LOMAS Snr is mentioned in the PCC Will of Richard TUCKWELL, Gent of Burford Proved 1803. John and Richard were brothers in law. Richard belonged to a successful farming family.

Burford was a thriving market town ("quality" farming, wool and saddles were its main trades) with regular horse races and fairs. It was also on several busy stagecoach routes.

Traders, travellers, farmers, weavers, entertainers, revellers, lawyers, doctors, etc., were all heading in and out of Burford with great frequency so there is absolutely no surprise that someone from London would end up there.

Would suggest you look at the Wills/Deeds for LOMASes in Middlesex and London on:-

1:- the National Archives Online at http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/power-search.asp?searchType=powersearch
2:- The London Metropolitan Archives
3:- The Guildhall, London

In addition John LOMAS & his wife Mary are mentioned in the PCC will of Elizabeth Tuckwell, Widow of Signett Burford Proved 1803. A son called John Humphrey Tuckwell LOMAS was also mentioned who was to receive £50.

Humphrey TUCKWELL was the most successful of the TUCKWELL farmers and I think was involved in using cutting edge farming methods/tools.

The LOMASes are supposed to have had a butchers shop at 111 High St Burford during the 1800s although I expect you know that.

If you want to find out more about what Burford was like would recommend the following books:-

A Thousand Years of Burford by Raymond & Joan Moody
Burford buildings and people in a Cotswold town by Antonia Catchpole, David Clark & Robert Peberdy

Incidentally Richard TUCKWELL was a hop merchant who owned the Brewery House (now called Baracca) in Sheep St and was just around the corner from the LOMASes on the High St.

Thanks for all the info on John Lomas.  Most interesting and useful.
I knew about the butcher's shop but a lot of the rest is new to me.
I've not been down the wills route but it sounds like I need to give it a try.
Again, many thanks for your help.

Missed One!

The will of William TUCKWELL, Yeoman of Signet, Proved 1804, says that William's sister was Mary LOMAS, wife of John LOMAS of Kensington, Middx. So that reinforces the Kensington link.

Their son John Humphrey Tuckwell LOMAS was left £150 by William. Lucky boy Smiley
