Convents in Kilkenny 1878-1900. Agnes Keenan
« on: Wednesday 25 February 09 16:16 UTC (UK) »

I am looking for information on my grandmother Agnes Ann Griffin who was born in Dover England 1878 then moved to Ireland.
Agnes's mother was Margaret or Maggie Griffin (nee Keenan) born 1858 who we know was the daughter of James Keenan born Ireland in about 1810-1820. He was a soldier stationed in Dover England.

Not much is known of Agnes between her birth in 1878 and when she appears in the UK Census in 1901 back in England. We understand from the family that she lived in Ireland and was brought up in a convent in Kilkenny for her early life before she returned to England. Obviously her grandfather James Keenan may be the link here as we know he was from Ireland so did Maggie and her daughter Agnes return to family in Kilkenny. Also what happened to Maggie Griffin, I cant find her in England so we presume she stayed in Ireland.
Can anyone give me information on tracing the Keenan line in this area at this time.
How many convents would there have been in Kilkenny in 1880-1900
Are there lists of convents and records which may hold a clue as to where she may have been brought up.

Any help or advise would be most appreciated.

Geoff

Hello Geoff,

Dr Jane Lyons' 'From Ireland' © Roman Catholic Diocese of Ossory, 1846, mentions three Convents in Kilkenny city and three located elsewhere in the county. www.from-ireland.net/diocs/1846/dioceseossory1846.htm

Hi Christopher
Thank you for the information re the Convents, very usefull. I have spent some time today going through the various leads and I have now contacted one of the convents and hopefully they may be able to help. I have been really struggling with this one.
I have only recently confirmed that Agnes's mother Margaret Keenan came from Fermoy Cork so I am now trying to also trace the Keenan line in Fermoy. Any help is greatfull appreciated as I am finding the Ireland records very hard to trace.

Thank you

Geoff
