Red Row "Completed"
« on: Wednesday 25 February 09 20:25 UTC (UK) »

In the 1851 census my gg grandfather is listed as a "Husbandman" I presume farmworker looking after stock.

His address is given as West Denton, Red Row. Can anyone tell me if West Denton is the name of a farm or perhaps Country House, is it still there?

Hi brimarge

from http://rmhh.co.uk/occup/
Husband-Man / Husbandman      1) Tenant farmer 2) Farmer dealing with animals (14th century From the Anglo-Saxon husbonda)  - a shepherd

West Denton, a township in Newburn parish, see
http://www.genuki.bpears.org.uk/NBL/Newburn/

In 1851 census enumeration page Red Row and Black Row seem to have been where a few households were living, listed off a much longer road named Bells Close
Someone more local may be able to say if Red Row still exists

Hi
There is a Red Row
on the A1066 or could be 1068
Red Row is about 13 miles from Morpeth in Northumberland
It is a very small village near to Acklington Prison and Broomhill
Saying that there could be other places with the same name

Elizabeth

It is the  A1068

I think that may be another place, Elizabeth, this one is/was in West Denton, Newburn, and have just had a look through the 1851 census, Red Row is just three houses (or households - occupants are the Browns, the Bagnalls and the Grahams) in West Denton, it doesn't appear in the 1901 census, so may not be there any more.

To see the approximate location, have a look at this site http://gis.durham.gov.uk/website/interMAP/viewer.htm
Click on search, and then enter the postcoade NE15 7LE.
This will take you to the approximate location.
You can zoom out by using the '-' button at the bottom of the page.
You can select older maps by using the drop-down menu at the bottom of the page.
West Denton and Black Row (referred to by Barbara) can easily be seen on the old maps, but I can't see Red Row.

Jen

I have just looked at the map, using the post code you gave, and I can see Red Row just to the east of Black Row. Its on the 1856 to 1865 map.

Both Red Row and Black Row lay within the "township" of West Denton, one of the 15 that comprised the Parish of Newburn... but they lay close to the parish border with Heddon Parish.

On his  map of Northumberland, 1769, Armstrong lists it as Redrow.

Fryer's map of 1820 shows Black RAW, but no Red ..

Greenwood's map of 1828 shows  Throckley Red Row just south of Black Row.

Situated just north of the Roman Road, east of Heddon, north of Throckley.

( Source.  communities.northumberland.gov.uk      in communities of Heddon and Ponteland, in "Plans" sections.)

A wee quote from the book " Goodwife Hot : Northumberland's Past in it's Place Names" by Godfrey Watson, 1970 .....

" The fact that there now exist Red Chirnells, Black Chirnells and Blue Chirnells points to a distinction between roofs as in the case of
Red Row, (now the North Farm) and Black Row , at Throckey... "

A modern map shows " Throckley North Farm" just south of A69 road, east of Birks Lane and Blackrow Lane ( and Black Row Farm).

I did wonder what had happened but after more than 150 years passing by I don't think a few weeks will make a lot of difference.
