Hi I have just started a family tree and discovered a great aunt Jane Ann Christie born 17 February 1866 married a William Smith, Joiner, Widower in Arbroath on 27 July 1926. 8 Maule Street, Arbroath is the address they lived at.
Another aunt, Jane Ann's sister is named Maggie Christie, born 13 December 1867, died 1958. There has been some talk of two sisters who had a haberdashery shop in Arbroath late 1800's early 1900's, wondered if it was them, the shop could have been in the High Street, Arbroath.
Jane Ann died in 1943. She had a daughter Jemima Irvine Emslie Christie in 1884. Jemima's fathers name on the birth certificate is a Robert Emslie, Farmers Son of Luthermuir, Parish of Marykirk.
I wondered if William Smith had family in his first marriage. His father was a David Smith, Manager. Mother Agnes Smith nee Adam.
Also, would I be able to trace Robert Emslie?
I would be grateful for any information received. Many thanks.

Hi Marylogue
Welcome to RootsChat
From the information you provided for the reputed father, Robert Emslie, this looks a possibility for him in the 1881 census:

Address: N. Mains Of Luther, Marykirk

Hi Marylogue
Sad ending to Jemima's life by the sounds of it
Not sure what you have by way of census information for the family. If you have any gaps, let us know and we can hopefully find those years. This for example looks to be Mary Jane with daughter Jemima and sister Maggie in 1891:
Jane Ann Christie 25, head, housekeeper, b. Fettercairn Jemima Christie 7, daughter, b. Fettercairn Maggie Christie 25, sister, Flax Spinner, b. Fettercairn
Address: 37 West Newgate, Arbroath
Did Jane Ann and Maggie's mother, Margaret Ferrier remarry? This looks like Jemima, showing as 'niece' in 1901:
Alexander Rae 53, Railway Surfaceman, b. Macher, Aberdeenshire Margaret Ferrior Rae 57, b. Marykirk Jemima I Emslie 17, niece, dressmaker, b. Fettercairn, Kincardineshire
Address: Brachead, Benholm, Kincardineshire
Also, for the 1901 census, not sure about Jane Ann having a haberdashery shop, she shows as a domestic cook, age 33, working at the Bremner household at Dundee Road Fot Wm Ho, in St Andrews, Angus.

Maybe a possible will for Alexander Christie, father of Jane Ann and Maggie, showing on Scotlands People. The family farmed at Mossend Farm. Alexander was showing as age 70 in 1881. There is an entry for wills which is possible:
Alexander Christie, 31/08/1887 - Grocer, Mossend Cottage, Parish of Fettercairn, County of Kincardine, d. 18/10/1885 at Mossend Cottage aforesaid, testate - Stonehaven Sheriff Court (SC5/41/31)

This looks a possible entry for William Smith in the 1901 census which you could verify by looking at this marriage cert. and his parents' details (there is a marriage showing for them in Arbroath in 1892):
William Smith 3, joiner, b. Arbroath Jessie Skinner/Smith 30, b. Logie Pert, Forfarshire David A Smith 5, b. Arbroath
Address: 33 Lochland St, Arbroath

Might be clearer for you with the release of the the 1911 census which, sadly for Scotland, is still 2 years away.

Robert looks to have taken over his father's farm by the look of his likely 1901 census entry:
Robert Emslie 38, farmer, b. Marykirk Caroline Emslie 26, b. Maryton, Forfarshire Annie Emslie 6, b. Marykirk William Emslie 4, b. Marykirk Lizzie Emslie 2, b. Marykirk Robert Emslie 6 months William Littlejohn 71, uncle, farm lab., b. Logie Pert, Forfarshire Margaret Barber 15, servant
North Mains Of Leether Farm Ho, Marykirk
