Anyone interested in Bewdley/Ribbesford?
« on: Monday 14 February 05 17:57 UTC (UK) »

Hi all! I have convinced my gullible family that Bewdley is the place they want to be at Easter! So, if anyone is interested in a photo or two, or a look-up for that area send me a PM about it. I'm promising nothing mind, but I'll write it in my little book and see if I have time to help Grin

Hi
I'm sure I don't have  anything that you haven't already seen  Smiley
All I have is The Golden Age of Bewdley book part 1 where it says James was headmaster from 1664-70, possibly born in Bewdley, possibly brother of a John Spilsbury who was until 1662 vicar of Bromsgrove. He took his BA at Magdalen College, Oxford in 1660. The first reference to him is in the Bridge Warden's Accounts "Pīd May 6th, Mr Spilsbury out of the ould Butter Crosse"

Have you looked at the wills which are for sale on the National Archives site? There is one for John Spilsbury clerk of Bromsgrove 1699 but also one for John Spillsbury of Rock 1691 and Rock is not far from Bewdley if it is the place I am thinking of.

And on the National Archives, access to access site searching for Spilsbury throws up a document from 1642 which is about Richard Spilsbury of Heightington in parish of Rocke, son of Thomas snr. Mentions that Thomas snr. had brother John Spilsbury clerk. There are a lot of papers for this family it seems.

Have you asked the Bewdley Historical Research Group what they have? Perhaps Oxford would have something if James graduated from there?

Good luck with it all anyhow..
