I cant unravel this mystery but I feel  it all points to Rachel not being the daughter of Wm Cutler as all his children were born in Gt. Marlowe.

This looks like Williams first marriage to Ann.

IGI extracted record

William Cutler to Ann Harris  9.4. 1834 Dorney, Buckingham.

Well... Shall I include her in my tree or not? She [according to the records] did not exist apart from the 1871 appearance - my thoughts are she did not exist. But why be called Rachel Cutler and be living as 'dau' of someone random?

I am afraid I cant answer that question.

It would seem to me that she is not the biological  daughter of Wm Cutler but we cannot prove it.

I have been trying in vain to find the death of James Steele between 1851 and 1861 (complete index's)  to see whether he could be Rachels father but I cant find one in Bucks. Have asked my friend to check in case I have missed anything.

This lady is a real mystery, I have searched the 1861 for any female Wiltshire, Steele or Cutler b. circa 1853 born in  Hambleden, Bucks but nothing fits. Sad  I have also tried just searching for any Rachel as well.

It was not uncommon to take others children in and bring them up as your own in those days, especially if the family had fallen on hard times, maybe this is the case with her, I just dont know.

Ok well... Mary Ann is a hard one to trace - I have her baptism date and marriage cert to William but I cannot find her death reg  Huh

I've never had real problems with this side of the family... but this is a big problem! For example my great-grandfather Harry Clements was born London in 1887 and raised in the Wiltshire countryside with complete strangers. So suppose it was not uncommon.

Thanks for all your help, I shan't include her in the records.

Hi Matt (and Patrish)

I would keep a note of Rachel Cutler and where you found her, but you can't properly add her into your tree because you don't know who she is yet.

Rachel may have been her middle name and she could be somewhere listed under her other forename, but I have looked all over for her under any names and variations I can think of, and she seems to have come out of thin air and vanished again!  It's possible she was adopted into the family - or she could have been entered on the 1871 census as daughter by mistake, as the two boys seem to be mistakenly entered as nephews

The only Rachel I can see in 1861 b.1853 Hambleden is a Rachel Stallwood and she is in the 1871 census too, so not her.

There is a possible death for James STEEL Sep 1855 Wycombe  3a    219
so it is possible he was Rachel's father

Kind regards,
Barbara
