Gows' From Little Dunkeld
« on: Friday 27 February 09 03:13 UTC (UK) »

Hi all,
I'm trying to find my ancestor Gows' who should have been buried in the Dunkeld area.
William, John, Jean, Agnes, James, Isabella, and David.
They were all born and christened at Little Dunkeld 1792-1810....... and farmed at the "Whins of Fordie".
I purchased the MI for Little Dunkeld Churchyard, but only managed to find one of the family buried there.....Hellen Gow.
Anyone have suggestions as to where I should look next?

Regards
Gary

Hello Gary
The nearest church to Whins of Fordie is at Caputh. The MIs have been published for the churchyard. The Gows listed are:

Charlotte Gow, wife of John Cameron 1909
Catherine Gow, wife of James McLaren 1900
Daniel Gow 1827 and his son Daniel 1800
Thomas Gow 1831
Alexander Gow 1878 (Schoolmaster Wester Caputh)
Ann Gow wife of John Chalmers 1907

Do you know if/where they moved after farming at Fordie?

Hi Chirp,
Thanks for your help.
At this stage I cant find any connection to the Gows' that you have listed,
but I have since found records for
Agnes Gow 1876
Isabella Gow 1884
and William Gow  1881 all of whom died at Little Dunkeld (but no record in the MI).
They all farmed together at the "Whins of Fordie" for at least 30 years along with their parents Agnes Gow (nee Thomson) who died 1858 at Caputh (no MI found yet) and William Gow (no records yet).

It appears that farming may not have been profitable enough to pay for tombstones in that era.

Cheers

Hi Gary,

I wonder if you have any information on Rutherfoords over there?  I am compiling our family tree and general information.

Our branch was originally from Perthshire (Dunning).

By the way, as recently as the 1980s there were Gows farming at Balquhandy near Dunning.

Thanks, Gary

I have looked over our tree and cannot really find a link, however, many trees often followed 'first son of first son' principle so ours may not be complete.

I wish you well.  Have you tried Perthshire Kinross Council archives/family history section - they have a website

http://www.pkc.gov.uk/Education+and+learning/Libraries+archives+and+learning+centres/Libraries+-+local+and+special+collections/Family+History+at+Local+Studies/

and some downloadable guidance info

Regards,

Edward
