Hi Sussex Researchers
Today, I had pleasure in visiting St John Sub Castro in Lewes and depositing with them the results of my 5 years work on that Church.
I left with them:
Transcripts of the Burial Register: Over 8000 entries Book 1 - Sept 4th 1602 - May 1st 1650 July 1st 1652 - Mar 17th 1699 Jul 6th 1700 - Nov 7th 1750 Jul 29th 1751 - Oct 11th 1799 Book 2 - Apr 21st 1800 - Jan 15th 1993 - Cross Referenced with 1851 Census.
All in Alphabetical Name Order
Monuments in Church & Churchyard A large volume of work - again in Alphabetical order containing every name from the 800 monuments in the Church & Yard (except 11 which were totally illegible) - together with a colour image of each monument. A copy of the Inscription on each monument will follow at a later date.
This volume has also been checked and is cross referenced with the Burial Registers. A Plan of the church and yard is also available to locate the monuments.
In the very near future, they will also receive: Baptisms in the Church - Jan 11th 1601 - 30th May 1999 At the last count there were 11404 Baptisms and rising
I understand that the Church is now open on a regular basis for people to visit and possibly do some research.
Dont worry if you cant get to the Church - all this information is available to you right here in the comfort of your own home through Rootschat.com and the Sussex Boards.

Hi Chris,
Wonderful work. Well done.
Are there any LEVETTs in the church yard that have headstones?
Would it be possible to send me the pictures and the plan of the church yard?
Kind regards Rick

Hi Suey
In the introduction to "Lewes in 1871 - A Household and political directory" it says:
"In the next three columns are totalled all the members of the household. The first includes the householder and all those related to him / her, the second the number of domestics or other servants, and the third all other members, such as boarders, visitors, other employees"

Hi there Anne-Marie
Thanks for the compliments on the St John Sub Castro work.
Unfortunately I have not done any work on the Marriage records of that church, that is scheduld for some time in the future.
The marriage records would be on film at the East Sussex Record Office in Lewes, plus there are transcribed coies of the marriages on the open bookshelf at the end of the record office (limited details though)
As yours has a date of about 1831, then no certificate will be available to you (began 1837) and even the filmed reigister could be of limited use as the content was not standardised till after1837, whilst burials and baptism were entered in a specialist book from 1813 onwards.
Sorry to be so negative
