DOUGLAS family Farr region Early 1800s and before??
« on: Saturday 28 February 09 04:21 UTC (UK) »

Keenly searching for any information about my great-great-grandmother's family of Douglas. I know she was born about 1824 at Clibrig, Farr District in Sutherland daughter of a John Douglas shepherd and Nelly Douglas (original surname unknown). Any information and stories very welcomed. Possibly a distant cousin has photos of these early ancestors?? This would be wonderful but I know very scarce! Much appreciated, Rob.

Hi rbell

It looks like Nelly's maiden name was also Douglas(s) going by the OPR birth entries showing on IGI for siblings to Isabella - all in Farr:

1. THOMAS DUGLASS Birth: 25 FEB 1822/ Christening: 12 APR 1822
2. GEORGE DOUGLASS Birth: 18 FEB 1826/ Christening: 30 MAR 1826
3. OLIVER DOUGLASS Birth: 15 FEB 1828/ Christening: 24 FEB 1828
4. DOUGLASS Male Birth: 03 AUG 1836

Thanks Monica.....I wonder whether you can check likely births of the parents? Assuming they were born locally of course! Thanks, Rob

Hi Rob

This is me just making some guesses from what I am seeing on the census transcripts - you would need to check the originals for accuracy Wink

This looks like Helen and Isabella in the 1841 census:

Helen Douglas 39, b. England
Isabella Douglas 17
William Douglas 11
James Douglas 9
Elizabeth Douglas 5
John Douglas 2

Address:  Corenapeon, Farr

And in 1851, likely entry for Helen:

Helen Douglass 47, shepherd's wife, b. England
William Douglass 20, b. Farr
James Douglass 18, b. Farr
Elisabeth Douglass 15, b. Farr
John Douglass 12, b. Farr
Ann McKay 50, visitor b. Farr
Jane Douglass 21, visitor, b. Halkirk Caithness
Walter Douglass 3, shepherd's son b. Farr
Margret Douglass 17, visitor, b. Kildonan, Sutherland

Address: Conna Fern, Farr

This looks like John and Helen's banns/marriage:

JOHN DOUGLAS and HELEN/NELLY DOUGLAS 27 APR 1821 Farr/ 27 APR 1821 Lairg, Sutherland

Helen still shows as married in 1851 so husband John is still alive then and probably working away from home. Hopefully they both made it past the start of official registration in 1855 to let you confirm their parents. This will help in particular in respect of Helen and her English birth.

In respect of John, I think this may be his birth and also some siblings. To parents Thomas Douglas and OLIVER YOUNG:

1. WILLIAM DOUGLESSBirth: 07 DEC 1798 Yetholm, Roxburgh
2. JOHN DOUGLASS Birth: 26 JUL 1800 Yetholm, Roxburgh
3. THOMAS DOUGLASS Birth: 04 OCT 1802 Yetholm, Roxburgh
4. JAMES DOUGLASS  Christening: 21 MAY 1805 Yetholm, Roxburgh

In 1851 in Cilbrig, where you have Isabella being born, shows this family:

James Douglas 45, shepherd, b. Huetina, Northumberland
Cathrine Douglas 37, b. Assynt, Sutherland
Elisa Douglas 12
Alexander Douglas 11
Oliver Douglas 10, daughter
Cathrine Douglas 9
Thomas Douglas 7
Jean Douglas 4
Oliver Douglas 80, mother, Formerly Shepherd Wife, b. Yetholm
Donald McKay 29, visitor
Adam Munro 25, visitor
Mary Sutherland 19, visitor
Isabella McKenzie 16, servant
John Sutherland 50, visitor
William Lucy 27 , visitor

Address: Clibrig, Farr

Smiley John and Helen show in 1861 I think which will mean that you should be able to find their death certs assuming they died in Scotland:

John Douglas 60, shepherd, b. Northumberland
Helen Douglas 58, b. Northumberland
Elizabeth Douglas 23 b. Farr
John Douglas 21, b. Farr
Jane Willson 50, servant b. Farr
Barbra McKay 60, visitor, Joint Servant Of A Lot Of Land, b. Farr

Address: Attanloughard Shepherd's House, Farr
