Verbal Family History #2: Pirate Capt. MORGAN
« on: Saturday 28 February 09 09:59 UTC (UK) »

As mentioned in my first post, sometimes verbal family history has a basis in truth, sometimes not. There are family historians and academics who study famous people and may document their lineage. In this case, it is reported such a study has been done surround the Capt. MORGAN, Pirate & Governor of Jamaica, however no internet sources indicate who this may be. It was completed before the Internet age (the story comes from the 1980's about "proven research"), we understand. So, here's the second tale about famous MORGANs in my family.

The link to MORGAN is through the BIDMEAD family in Coventry. What is interesting about this tale is that it survived 150 years along separate family lines that split in Coventry around 1860. One group went to Canada (tales residing in Nova Scotia) and the other New Zealand which had the same story. My research suggests the Coventry BIDMEADs are a branch of the BIDMEADs from Gloucestershire, who left in the mid to late 1700's. GLS is adjacent to S. Wales, the home of the MORGAN surname. In Australia, there is the family of BIDMEAD-MORGAN, relating to a GLS marriage, which may or may not be alleged link.

Such verbal tales of links to royalty are used by the UK ITV's show "So You Think You are Royal?". Stronger weight is put on tales that survive down different branches over long periods. In lieu of no TV show for linking to famous historical characters, is there anyone with information that may help?

Thanks,
Mark
