Monk Family of Portsea Hampshire
« on: Saturday 20 June 09 10:33 UTC (UK) »

I am absolutely stuck on a Daniel Monk who married an Elizabeth before 1806 probably in Portsea. They had a son named Daniel who was born in 1806 and who married 1. Elizabeth Harriett Roper 2. Mary Ann Bailey
Any smidgin of info. would be gratefully received. I have searched Latterday Saints website and Rootsweb but to no avail.

You are going to need to look through parish registers, held at Local record Offices. Your profile doesnt say where you live, so I dont know if getting to the LRO is practical.
If not, you may find someone on here who has access to some PRs and will look in those they have.

So - first will be to find a chrsitening of young Daniel. Does the approx birth year of 1806 come from a census? What place of birth does he give (not just on one census but on as many as he appears on).
That will give a clue where to start looking, but remember to check neighbouring parishes too.
Hopefully, if successful, yuo may find chrsiteneings for siblings and so get an impression of the family, and when the parents Daniel and  Elizabeth might have married (where did you get his mothers name from by the way?).  If you are very lucky the christening records might give you her maiden name, or an occupation for Daniel but probably not!
Then it will time to think about working back. Of course, Daniel senior might have been born anywhere - and moved to the place of marriage at some point. ANd he could have been 16 or 66 wheh he married! Or any other age ...
So it tends to get harder as you go back - but great fun researching!
Remember LRO's may hold all sorts of other surviving documents other than Parish records which may help.

Thank you for your advice. I think a trip to Hampshire is the only way forward.

Have you found him on the census at all?  At the moment I cannot find a Daniel Monk baptised around that time - not in the CofE registers anyway.

I see he married Mary Ann Bailey in 1852.  His marriage certificate would give his father's name which may help to track him down.
