My Great great grandmother Ann David
|
Following the excellent advice on this board I have just found five document references relating to my gg-grandmother and her second husband on NAAIRS.
I have wondered for a long time what became of him and I knew he had links to South Africa but these documents seem to suggest that they divorced in 1896. Unfortunately three of the documents are not in English. Could someone please give an idea of what the following descriptions mean before I decide to order copies?
STAATSPROCUREUR. ZENDT 2 DOCUMENTEN RE HUWELYK "THOMAS SPENCER EN MARY JOHNS" TER LEGALISEERING VAN HANDTEEKENINGEN.
CONSUL GENERAAL, ZUID-AFRIKAANSCHE REPUBLIEK, LONDEN. RA2561/96 ZENDT TERUG DE TWEE DOCUMENTEN BETREFFENDE HET HUWELYK VAN THOMAS SPENCER EN MARY JONES BEHOORLYK GELEGALISEERD.
STAATSECRETARIS. STAATSPROCUREUR ZENDT IN 2 DOCUMENTEN BETREFFENDE VOLTROKKEN HUWELIJK TUSSCHEN THOMAS SPENCER EN MARY JOHNS IN ENGELAND TER LEGALISATIE VAN DE HANDTEEKENINGEN.
Many thanks in anticipation.
Ruth

Thanks for that genechaser.
I think I'll order the two English documents first and then decide on the others.

Hi Ruth
Hope I can be of some help.........firstly, a divorce in 1896 which have been an enormous scandal! Happened almost NEVER at all!
Secondly, to acquire any documents from South Africa, a nightmare, especially if you need to deal with Dept of Home Affairs, in Pretoria.
I left SA 12 years ago, was divorced myself, there, nearly 20 years ago, will look up word for divorce, and get back to you.
I thought 'huwelyk' is marriage, not divorce. Also, 'handteekeningen', is a signature. 'ter' is for. 'tusschen' is between, i.e between the couple.
I would suggest that the three docs you quote from refer to acquiring proof of the marriage, the signatures, etc. wonder how you have got on?
Cheers Danchaslyn

Hi Ruth,
My afrikaans is rusty, but my dutch will help me out here ...
STAATSPROCUREUR. ZENDT 2 DOCUMENTEN RE HUWELYK "THOMAS SPENCER EN MARY JOHNS" TER LEGALISEERING VAN HANDTEEKENINGEN. State prosecutor sends 2 documents re marriage Thomas SPENCER and Mary JOHNS to legitamize the signatures.
CONSUL GENERAAL, ZUID-AFRIKAANSCHE REPUBLIEK, LONDEN. RA2561/96 ZENDT TERUG DE TWEE DOCUMENTEN BETREFFENDE HET HUWELYK VAN THOMAS SPENCER EN MARY JONES BEHOORLYK GELEGALISEERD.
Consul General, South African Republic, London, RA2516/96 returns the two documents relating to the marriage of Thomas SPENCER and Mary JONES, completely legitamized.
STAATSECRETARIS. STAATSPROCUREUR ZENDT IN 2 DOCUMENTEN BETREFFENDE VOLTROKKEN HUWELIJK TUSSCHEN THOMAS SPENCER EN MARY JOHNS IN ENGELAND TER LEGALISATIE VAN DE HANDTEEKENINGEN Secretary of State. State prosecutor sends two documents relating to the marriage between Thomas SPENCER and Mary JOHNS in England for the signatures to be legitimized.
Basically just a record of the route back and forth of the same document .. probably the original marriage certificate.
best wishes Leanne in the Netherlands

Thanks everyone for your help.
Today I received copies of the two South African files relating to the 1896 divorce of my gg Grandmother thanks to the wonderful service offered by eGGSA. Unfortunately both files are in Afrikaans, one six pages and the other nine pages.
I think they would be too long to post on this forum so could anyone advise me where I can have them translated?
Many thanks
Ruth

Hello Ruth
So glad that you've received the docs you need!
What is eGGSA please?
Can I ask you please to read my topic "Moe Family, Norway" in RC Europe, as I've asked some questions there about N.A.A.I.R.S. and South African documents. Perhaps you will know the answers?
Wish I could help with your translation, but short of mailing the whole lot???!!!!
Cheers

What is eGGSA please? The particular sticky topic where you'll find the info is : "Obtaining copies of documents from the National Archives"
Can I ask you please to read my topic "Moe Family, Norway" in RC Europe, as I've asked some questions there about N.A.A.I.R.S. and South African documents. Perhaps you will know the answers?
You're more likely to get the help you need with South African questions if you post them here.
cheers Leanne

Hi Leeanne
Thank you very much for taking the time and trouble to make it all a bit clearer for me.
Also, it's a bit difficult for me to split the topic now, I've been smacked on the wrists before for having the same subject in two regions!!! or, should I say, asking different questions applying to different countries, in different sections of RC, but about the same family.
Cheers
