Miss Jean Jolly OBE possibly daughter of David & Margaret?
« on: Sunday 01 March 09 05:00 UTC (UK) »

I am looking for Jane / Jean Donald Jolly, but have concluded that this is not the one born in 1896 to David Rennie Jolly and Margaret Lyall Donald.  I am looking for one born possibly born to David Douglas Annand Jolly and Margaret McFarlane Donald.  They were married in 1907.  I do not know that she exists.  I know this sounds nuts, but my mother is adamant that Miss Jean Jolly, OBE matron of both Stobhill and Southern General Hospitals was her grandfather's cousin or her dad's aunt.  When she christened the planes at Renfrew airport in 1955 she was wearing her OBE pin which she may have gotten in 1954.  I figure if the Jane born to David Rennie Jolly & Margaret Donald is the wrong one, the most logical other pair to have a daughter with Donald as the middle name is David Douglas Annand Jolly and Margaret McFarlane Donald.  This family is from Kincardine & Glasgow.  She is also not Jane Annand Jolly born in 1884 to Robert Walker Jolly.  Of all the people my mom wants me to find this is it!  My mom remembers her parents talking about the planes.  She also knows they saw her frequently and my mom's dad called her his aunt...but, it could have been his dad's cousin.  Someone help! Tongue

Hi Hazelanne,
This is an interesting and oblique link to your posting.
A Miss Jean Jolly gave my wife and me a wedding present in 1963 in Glasgow.
Would your mum know if she was a friend of my wife's Aunt Annie (Fairfull) Gresham of Bishopbriggs ...born 1898 in Maryhill ...died in Bishopbriggs (near Stobhill Hospital) in 1979?

Hi Hazelanne

I searched for deaths of a Jean* Joll* on Scotlands People born 1900 +/- 10yrs and dieing after 1955. There were only 9 entries. 8 of the entries show additional surnames which would indicate a marriage. There is only one entry without a further surname and this is for a death of a Jeannie Jolly in 1980, age 72, in Paisley Renfrewshire. Given the period, it is a certificate that would have to be ordered or looked up at NRH in Edinburgh.

Mum does not recall Aunt Annie...sorry.  Ok.  I have this same info on Jean Donald Jolly.  I am pretty sure she is the one, but I do not know where she fits into our tree.  By the late 1800's early 1900's the family was in Glasgow area.  I just can not work out where she fits in.  I am attaching what I have (starting with my mom's ggg-grandfather).  She has to fit in somewhere.  Again, I talked to mom today and she says this Jean was close to her parents.  I think it is the one we have all been looking at, or she is the daughter of David Annand Jolly and Margaret McFarlane Donald - It is certainly a big mystery.  We call it the missing Jean. Cheesy

Hello again Hazelanne007,
It appears that after retirement from nursing that Jean/JANE Donald Jolly went back to Forfar ...
GRO Death Index
1981  JANE DONALD JOLLY   aged 84 years FORFAR /ANGUS
GROS DATA CODE   364/00 0072
To ascertain if this was 'The Matron', you would have to apply to GRO for the Death Certificate which usually costs c. £10 + postage [from ones I have sent for]
Another possible link from JDJolly to my wife is that her sister Helen (Dale) Waiters married to William Waiters of Arbroath was also friendly with JDJ ... and JDJ's mother Margaret Donald was born in Arbroath !

I notice that you have strong links back to Benholm/Johnshaven/St Cyrus for Jolly! and a Gove middle name also appears .... our good friend John Gove (Butcher) of Gourdon up the road from 'Johnna' was our church organist at St Cyrus when I was an Elder and Session Clerk there in my time as the schoolmaster from 1968-71/. I also preached at Benhom Kirk and 'Johnna' Kirk as locum for the minister during holiday time for him! Our church choir with help from  members of Montrose Operatic Soc. also performed chosen parts of The Messiah in Garvoch/St Cyrus in 1970 under John Gove and Jim Spence's inspired leadership. c.f. 2 attachments.

To help to try to link JDJ's line to your father per JDJ possibly being his father's cousin or your father's aunt, I need your father's parents' B/M/D details ... in Scotland?
Aye

The other useful way forward I think would be to follow Gerry's advice and contact the NHS archivist who, I would imagine, would be able to access personal details on JDL to at least let you verify her origins. You have a number of possible births for her now which hopefully would connect to information you are able to get from the archives.

Monica

Just putting a link to the other post on JDL to keep responses together:

Hi again Hazelanne 007
If your mother's father called JDJ OBE his AUNT and your mother's grand father called her his COUSIN, then if you are on the DD Annand Jolly lineage ... and JDJ OBE is of the D Rennie Jolly lineage as looks VERY likely, .... the link may well be between DDA Jolly and DR Jolly ...  or their parents or their grandparents.
It is not far from Forfar to Kincardineshire where the 19th century Jollys lived.
Fascinating challenge if you are on the Annand Jolly lineage :-)
