Help in reading birth cert notes please!
« on: Monday 02 March 09 20:34 UTC (UK) »

I have located the birth certificate of my mother's grandmother (I think) but it's another illegitimate birth. It's in the Dundee registers for 13th May 1860.
However, in the margin are some very faint notes that might be referring to the paternity (??). Can anyone shed any light on this PLEASE.

Hi Grange

It could be a reference to the Register of Corrected Entries (RCE). Did you view this on Scotlands People? If so, was there a red button on the search result page with a reference to the RCEs (normally shows before you click to view the actual image). Might be worth checking, from memory, it's another 2 units to view the RCE.

Thanks for that suggestion, Monica. Unfortunately there's no red button! I'm trying to locate her mother's details- she's on the birth cert as Lily Jack. Is lily a shortening of Elizabeth or another Christian name??

Hi Di  Smiley

Is it possible for you to put up just the section that contains the marginal notes - maybe some of us could have a go at reading them.

Hi

It is a Reg of Corrected Entries note, as Monica said. i can't make it all out - especially the second third line.

This is what I've got:

Dec(laration) of Paternity

See Reg(ister)  of Cor(rected)  E(ntrie)s
7o3(?) <1or 2> < p or / > 111

4 Sept 1863

Gadget

Edited to change second to third - I obviously couldn't count last night  Grin

Hi Di,

I suggest that you submit a Contact Form to ScotlandsPeople (which will refer it to GROS).

They are very good at providing a clear paper copy of a downloaded certificate which is difficult to read.

And they may well be able to explain why there is no RCE entry available online - and perhaps even locate it.
