'Landford, Devon'
« on: Monday 02 March 09 23:47 UTC (UK) »

In the 1871 census, my ancestor Elizabeth Priscott, nee Methers or Metters, stated that she had been born in 'Landford, Devon'. Where was this? Google searches find no evidence that any such place has ever existed.

However, I see there is a place in Devon called Langford, although it does not appear to be a proper parish. Is there any kind soul out there with the local knowledge to tell me if 'Landford' is likely to be an error for 'Langford'? And if so, where oh where are the parish registers located?

Many thanks!

Hello   Smiley

Welcome to Rootschat    Grin

Do you have Elizabeth in earlier census ?  Maybe she states a different location?

What was her husband's name?

Hi
If that is the person who is 60 and a lodger in Portsea, Hants.

I think it is a transcription error.

The first letter is the same as the S in Southsea 2 entires above, and there is a Sandford.

Incidently the written entry, ion the census, for her name is Priscott but the transcribed entry says Prescott.

Stinton: of course, it's a transcription error!! Why didn't I spot that?  Embarrassed

Thank you both so much for taking the time to help me. Is it normal to get replies so soon?

I haven't yet found Elizabeth in the 1851 or 1861 censuses. The 1841 census confirms that she was born in Devon.

The names Priscott and Prescott are confused with each other in all kinds of sources, including BMD certificates.  I'm getting used to it now, but it was quite worrying when I started researching this family...
