Parishes and Hundreds
« on: Tuesday 07 April 09 23:46 UTC (UK) »

Ive just come back from Northants RO and saw they had a map of the parishes of the county. Does anyone know if they are available online and for other counties too?

if you look at the Genuki page for the counties you're interested in, and check maps, there are sometimes parish maps. The ones for Yorkshire are really good

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/#Maps

Link to the Cornwall one seems to be broken

Here is an antique map of the Hundreds.  If you click on it you can enlarge it a little.

http://nla.gov.au/nla.map-ra40-s21

There are six modern hundreds but back in Doomsday there were only four.

Thanks for that. So just to clarify, a hundred is one or more parishes?

A hundred was originally a Saxon area of land.  It consisted of one hundred hides and was sufficient to support a hundred families.  A shire which was administered by a shire reeve (sheriff) consisted of a number of hundreds.

Al though they are often aligned the boundaries of hundreds did not correspond to county boundaries.  The hundred court was responsible for the mantenace of the Frankpledge system annd through the sheriff to the King.

The Hundreds Courts started to fall out of use in the 17th century and were finally replaced by the County Courts in 1869.  They had no legal or administrative role after 1886 when they were no longer used to define parliamentary boundaries (many constituencies were constructed from one or more hundreds) although they were never formally abolished.

Some of the new London Boroughs in 1969 were actually named after the hundred which constitutued much of their area.

Thanks to this topic I've found the map of my home county of Derbyshire.

Incidently when talking of the Shires, Hundreds and Parishes of a County don't forget Wapentakes and Liberties!   Actually Wapentake is another name for a Hundred in areas of Viking Settlement such as the Soke of the Wapentake of Wirksworth in Derbyshire.   A Liberty is the legal term for a district of jurisdiction within which certain exclusive privileges may be exercised and it's boundary usually follows that of the parish boundary.   It is an area usually outside the remit of a Sheriff, and in Derbyshire applies only to the area covered by the lead mining laws.   This mineral area in the north of the county called the King's or Queen's Field (depending who is on the throne) is within two Hundreds, the High Peak Hundred and the Soke of the Wapentake of Wirksworth   Annually a court (the Barmote Court) is held in April each year at the Barmote Court, Wirksworth, formerly it was held bi-annually.   It is an industrial court which is a separate judiciary system from the rest of the country's legal system and has been in existence since the 13th centuary.  Basically it is for the regulation of, and for deciding questions connected with the workings of the mines, settling disputes and matters appertaining to lead mining laws.  The important legal right of a Mining Liberty was that until the two major Acts of Parliament of 1851 and 1852 which legally confirmed a lot of the old lead mining laws, only the Barmaster (he ran the court) or his Deputy could hold the inquest into any accidents or deaths occurring below ground or on the surface of the mine, the inquest was outside the jurisdiction of a Coroner, thus lead mining inquests until those dates cannot be found in Coroners records, only in a Barmaster's book, which often was destroyed or lost after he left office.   Neither could a Sheriff arrest a lead miner on the "body of the mine" ie. either below ground or on the surface, only a Barmaster.

I apologise for side stepping the main theme of this topic and hope that I haven't bored you.   I suppose I should post about the Barmote courts and lead mining to the Derbyshire section it is more applicable there.  I am a member of Derbyshire Family History Society and if anyone is interested in reading further into this fasinating subject I wrote an article on "Lead Mine Accidents and Inquests in the King's Field, Derbyshire" which was published in their Magazine, Issue 88, March, 1999 pp34-34.
