Knocknaroy townland, Aghaloo Parish
« on: Wednesday 04 March 09 16:12 GMT (UK) »

I am wondering what church residents of Knocknaroy townland, Aghaloo Parish would have attended.  This townland is at the northern extremity of the parish and quite removed from the principal town of the parish; namely Caledon.  I am wondering if Aughnacloy, Carnteel Parish was preferred.

Which religion are you interested in, and what period?

For Church of Ireland, Brantry church, in the townland of Creevelough, would seem to be the nearest. Brantry parish was formed in the 1840s, drawing townlands from Aghaloo, Carnteel & Clonfeacle.

My interest is in James Kinkade, Robert Kinkade and William Kinkade who appear in the Tithe Composition Applottement Books for Knocknaroy Townland, Aghaloo Parish.  I suspect they might have went there from Londonderry.  I'm hoping the local churches may have some tidbits on them.

Kincaids were mostly Presbyterian.  However, given the two Kincaids in the Dungannon District marriages in the 1840s they may have been C of I.  A William Kincaid was still in Knocknaroy by the time of the Griffiths valuation.

Early OS maps show Munterbyrne Meeting House (with associated Manse and Grave Yard) near the northern boundary of the townland of Lismulladown. The settlement is now spelled Minterburn; there are Presbyterian registers in PRONI, and the Presbyterian congregation appears to have been studied:

Now sure the the information below will make things clearer or more confusiing.

Minterburn Presbyterian Church in the parish of Aghaloo, Tyrone, was originally known by that name or as Aghalow. First minister was Mr. John Abernethy (one of the Presbyterian ministers deputed to to to London to congratulate Willim of Orange upon his arrival in England) who was ejected in 1661.
1714 congregation divided- part formed Tewgh/Teugh or Glennan, part worshiped at Minterburn and part worshipped at Kinnaird of Lisluney (the orginial settlement).

Aghalow Presbyterian Church. The 17th century parish of Aghalow was very large extending roughly from present day Ballygawley to Caledon. Original church now in ruins was in northern tip of parish mid way between Ballygawley and Aughnacloy. Presbyterians living anywhere in this area described themselves as of Aghalow but congregational activity seems to have centred round the parish church. The first Presbyterian building was between it and Ballygawley.

Lisloony (near Tynan, Co Armagh) is over twice as far from Knocknaroy as Minterburn.

Glennan (near Glaslough, Co Monaghan) is also well over twice as far from Knocknaroy as Minterburn.

Crilly (SE of Augnacloy) is about equidistant with Minterburn as the crow flies, but much further by road.
