Wm & Sarah Ellis - 1916
|
I'm bashing my head against a brickwall trying to find my gt grandparents marriage. I have my grandfather Henry Tuttle marriage cert which gives his father as Samuel Tuttle and I have his birth cert which gives his mother as Esther Tuttle formerly Quantrill. On the 1851 census Samuel and Ester are married and living in Wicklewood, Norfolk. I've tried looking on 1837 on-line but have had no luck, can anyone help or point me in the right direction please

Hi!
If you have checked the GRO records (St. Catherines index of births, marriage and deaths), and you cannot find a marriage, it could mean you will need to check church records for the area. As the general register for BMD started in 1837 to the present day, it did not become complusory to register until 1875, where upon people were fined for not registering. Hope this info is of help.

Hi,
Just a thought, could Esther have been married before?
On FreeBMD there is a marriage listed at Henstead, Norfolk, for Samuel Tuttle and on the same page is an Esther Barber, (Sept qtr 1843 Vol 13 p. 261).
Regards, Sasha.

Hi!
Have also spotted the marriage registered in Henstead, Norfolk
Samuel Tuttle Sept quarter 1843 ref 13 261 Esther Barber Sept quarter 1843 ref 13 261
Cannot find a marriage between a Barber and a Quantrill on line for you.

Just out of interest, I live midway between Wicklewood and "Henstead" which actually covers several villages including Hethersett and Ketteringham.
The next road up from me is called Tuttles Lane.

Many thanks for all the replies, yes I've noticed the marriages of Samuel Tuttle and Esther Barber in 1843 but I don't think they are the right people.
According to the 1851 census (a very kind person found it for me) Samuel is aged 24 and Esther is aged 22 with a daughter Sarah aged 1. I know the legal age for marriage was about 12 years old, but did people really get married that young.
I shall have to find out where the church records are kept and try to get to see them.
Interesting to know that there is a Tuttles Lane, does anybody know if Low Street in Wicklewood still exists.
thanks again, Bee

Hi, yes, I believe Low Road is still in Wicklewood.
If you go on the above link you will be able to look at Parish records and surname search for local villages. There are a lot of Tuttles and Quantrills and all versions of these names.
By the way, have you tried the Mormon family records site aswell. Ive found a lot of earlier dates on that site. It is well worth checking. www/familysearch.org
