Nice work! I'll have to print it all out and have a look over it.
I think I've just tracked him down in the 1881 census. A lazy census man has only recorded the first initial. Check out: Class: RG11; Piece: 351; Folio: 93; Page: 19; Line: ; GSU roll: 1341076.

Excellent - it's all coming together!
Edwin and Isabella both died before the 1911 census - Edwin in 1910 and Isabella in 1908 (IIRC). I did have a quick go on the 1911 census at trying to find out what happened to the pub, but couldn't find the address, and it costs a fortune to keep looking at all the data!
I've just had a quick look for the marriage between Elizabeth and Alfred (parents of edwin) on freebmd and I reckon I've got a decent match there too, good stuff!

I see. Could you tell me which records you're using to get that info and where I might be able to find it? It'd be nice to have a printout of the pub record - ancestry.co.uk only seems to have it in the 1902 phone book.

That is a good site indeed - I've managed to get PO records in pdf form for 1895, 1899, 1910, 1914, 1915.
It is still a bit of a mystery as to why throughout all the years it's listed as being at number 15, whereas the 1901 census states number 14. Even the 1899 record (before the census) shows it as number 15 in the PO directory.
When the cycle enamlers came along they were listed as number 13 and 14, so perhaps the pub stayed next door, just unoccupied.

Excellent, I'll have to look into it.
I've now found out that the street was renamed (presumably because there's were loads of different berkley streets, and it'd be confusing in modern times) to Briset Street, confirmed by looking at old maps.
I went onto Google Street View with very high hopes of seeing a pub, but all I saw was a block of flats - d'oh!
