Inquest in Worcs

My gt gt grandfather John Cook drowned in Stourport and an inquest was held by the Worcs Coroner, William Samuel Price Hughes, on 7th Feb 1866. Would there be a record of the inquest somewhere? Or might it have been reported in a local newspaper?  I`ve no idea where to look!

Would most likely be a report in the paper. I found reports of 2 of my own ancestors who had inquests into their deaths.

Worcester History Centre has microfilm of old local newspapers. Mine appeared in two different papers - Berrows Journal & another Worcester one - the Worcester Chronicle?

I think you need to apply to the coroner and then they will let you see the report. Good luck looking for it in the papers though you may get lucky.

Thanks Tina - I have already contacted the coroner, got his permission, then was told the records don`t go back far enough!  I think my only hope is the newspapers

One of the newspaper reports I found was from 1864 so you should find it quite easily - just look at the weeks around the date you have. In my case the inquest was held in a room at the local pub and gave witness details and statements. It appeared in 2 different papers, each giving a slightly different version, so check both if you can.

Netti - to update you - I found the information I wanted in Berrows Journal - there were no other newspapers available at Worcester History Centre for the date I needed. It appears there was a tremendous storm in the area on the night in question and "because of the extreme darkness and inclemency of the weather he either missed his road and walked into the Canal, or his hat blew off and in endeavouring to recover it he fell in". !!

Absolutely - there were some particularly gruesome industrial accidents in the next column!
I thought the History Centre was great - I might have to move to Worcester!

I've been to the Worcester centre too, and agree, it's a nice place. It's also got some good pubs nearby for a little light refreshment when the eyes are getting somwewhat tired after reading such tiny print.

I was looking for an inquest into my 4x gt grandfather's death - one distant cousin reckons he was murdered in 1823. I couldn't find an inquest, but did find a notice of his death. In the same paper, they were discussing the possible change to decimal currency.  Shocked  Shocked

If you liked the Family History Centre, Jane, the archives on the edge of the city are terrific.
I suppose I'm lucky, I only live a few miles up the road.
