Great Hucklow
« on: Thursday 05 March 09 12:00 GMT (UK) »

I've seen who lived in Great Hucklow in past censuses, but not where they lived. Are there any records of the actual houses in Great Hucklow? I am interested in a particular house today called Ash Cottage just off the main road that runs through the village. I guess it is about 200 years old and was originally a miner's cottage. It is right next to the Old Manse, which I believe was built in 1725 and was first called the New Hall.

Just noticed that in the 1857 trade directory for Great Hucklow, Francis Ash and Ash, Frost & Walker were farmers. Also in the 1881 trade directory, Mrs Sarah Ash was a farmer. Ash Cottage could have been where the Ash family of farmers lived.
