Samuel James and Emiy King
« on: Wednesday 01 August 07 15:25 UTC (UK) »

Trying to trace any information about my great grand parents, Samuel James and Emily King(both travellers). Don't know where they were born but they settled in Kent.
I have Samuel James' death certificate. It says that he died in Bromley,Kent in 1944 aged 61, occupation hawker. This is all I know about him.
His wife was Emily King and she died in Bromley, Kent in 1965 aged 79.
I think they had 7 children, Amelia, Louise, Brittania, Leonard, Ellen, Rose and Robert. In 1944 they were living in Downe, Kent.
Would be grateful for any info.

Hi,
I am looking for a James James Born in Kent, He married a Alvinea Eastwood Breeds in Strood in Kent. They were travellers too.

But I can't find them on any census. Perhaps they are related to your Samuel James. They are my Gt.grandparents. Alvinea was a fortune teller.

Have you seen this possible birth registration for Alvinea? I see she married James in 1896, so the only census they'd be together is 1901  Undecided

Alvina Breeds March 1876 Bromley Vol 2a Page 392

Could this be Alvina in 1891? Its in the name "Eastwood" but you mention her name is "Eastwood Breeds" -

Hi Catone;

Thankyou for your trouble.
The birth for Alvinea is correct.
But the family you found is not hers, as her father was called John Breeds, and her mother Alvina (funny that!)
I can find Alvinea it is her husband James James that is the trouble (typical men!!)
So thankyou once again, Cheers Kuri.

Don't know if there is any connection or not, but I have a Francis King b.1870 Woodchurch, Kent, who went to live in East Sussex then the New Forest, then went off with a gypsy/travelling  woman from East Sussex. Up until  the 1960's they were gypsies and brought up their children/grandchildren in wagons and nissan huts. The woman's name was Fanny (Frances Arnold) and they were not married. They had 15 children, only three of whom were registered. The only name I have is Phoebe b.1901 Lower Green, Woodchurch. Maybe there is a connection through one of the other children?

Just joined. My great-great grandfather was James James, and he "knew" in the Biblical sense as well as social, Margaret Crick, a 20 year-old servant in Pimlico, in early 1856. There was a child, Emily (Lambeth Lying-in Hospital Baptismal register) born in November, my great-grandmother.

Father was given as James James, ...no residence; and his Trade, Profession or Quality given as:"Traveller"
The couple never married.

now I would love to know more about my GG grandfather!

Does "Traveller" on a document of those years refer to a Gypsy Traveller? Has anyone info on   a Traveller family called James?

TYVM!   I see a lot of James were from Wales around 1861 and 1871.  Pimlico is a "nice" district in central London. Our Margaret was originally from the Poplar area (Tower Hamlets, near East India docks.) Her dad was a master sawyer. She went to work as a domestic for a family there and "got involved" with James James. Her employer paid the stay in the Lying -in Hospital in Lambeth. It seems she did not marry James, but had the baby, worked as a nurse then died of a fever. Her family took in the baby, raised her and she came to Canada in 1884 as nursemaid to a business family and later married an Englishman here. She was my maternal great-gran. She concocted a lovely story about her assassinated Spanish Diplomat daddy, etc. I guess in those days one did not admit to being illegitimate. Anyway we are quite excited to think we have Romany blood. Always did like travelling and camping!

It would be great to know more about the James family. Do you use Ancestry.com?

Hi,
My Gt Grandfather was a James James born in 1872/4 in Maidstone. He married an Alvinea Eastwood Breeds in 1896 a year after my Grandmother Mary Ann was born. Any Connection to your James James?

If anything, maybe a father of your JJ. ours would have been born around 1825 or so, I imagine. We'll keep hoping!
