For those who can read german:
Quote

Roughly:  about 40% of the historical certificates, charters etc have been retrieved ... some of them from the 15th. century ... they are working in 2 shifts, soon to be 3 shifts, to retrieve materials ... friday night, helpers retrieved 50 containers with documents, about 0.8% of the buried material ...

The rest of the article goes on to say that as material is retrieved, any wet coverings are being replaced with dry covers, and soaked documents are being frozen immediately, to prevent further damage before they can be restored.

The archive director says it will be a long time before the archive re-opens, and that the restoration will take 2-3 decades.

For those interested in the latest news in English - link to Die Welt

http://www.welt.de/english-news/article3331556/Assault-on-Colognes-historical-core.html

One poor man has been found dead- they believe killed whilst he slept - the other still missing.

Family Reflections

Re: Germany: Cologne archives collapse.

I was about to post a request for an address to send for a copy of a birth certificate issued in Cologne in 1896, when a quick search for similar, previous queries resulted in me finding this dreadful news.

I  assume that this building is the place that held the records I was searching for, but my thoughts are now with the families of those who have lost lives.

My research can wait, it somehow doesn't seem so important now.

A press release from last week:

Almost everything has been saved. "It's sensational, that almost everything is there, in some form", said the director Bettina Schmidt-Czaia.  Less than a quarter ist damaged (zerschnipselt, in pieces) and much of this can be reconstructed using special software.  The restoration will take at least 30 years. 85% of the inventory has now been salvaged.

However if they copied the originals and distributed copies to other archives and libraries the loss would be even lower.
We at Anguline Research Archives have ongoing free offers to archives to digitise their records to enable widespread dispersion of valuable records.
