McSheffrey Estate Drumaville, Co Donegal
« on: Wednesday 04 March 09 21:32 UTC (UK) »

Does anyone know how I can find out about this estate and why land was sold off. My Great Grandfather Henry Patrick Mcloughlin bought some land from this estate  in Drumaville, divison of Culdaff Donegal in 1915.  I do not know how he got funds but on the deeds I think it says he had an occupation as rate collector , but I am not sure if I am reading the document correctly.

Thanks for any help

the sale might be connected to the Irish Land Commission -

many estates were split up an sold off in the late 1800s/early 1900s

Hi,
Shane is probably correct. To give an example my Ggrandfather rented a House, Offices and about 50 acres of land in Co Londonderry and paid rent of £35 annually. In 1887, according to a Land Commission document, he bought this land with a government mortgage of £705 repayable over 49 years at an interest rate of three and one eighth percent.

Regards

Hello Gracelands:

I just noticed your message heading.. As my husband is a McSheffrey, his great grandfather came from Donegal in 1850 to settle in the provice of Quebec.  Do you have any idea which McSheffrey owned the land?  McSheffrey is not a very common name here and just about any with that Surname in Canada is related to my husband.

Cheers
Anne
