St George, Doncaster Burials: Stephenson
« on: Friday 06 March 09 00:12 UTC (UK) »

Does any body have the burial records for St George's in Doncaster. I am looking for the surname STEPHENSON (or Stevenson etc.) any time period.
Logged

William Stephenson - born 1814 at Doncaster West Yorkshire - married Mary Scott at Cottingham East Yorkshire (Hull) in 1838. Williams parents I believe were another Wm Stephenson and an Alice Carter - married Cantley Parish W Yorks (Doncaster) in 1811..... Other east riding names are Nicholls (Bridlington, Yorks and Wigan Lancs.) and the surname Withernwick.

Well OLY ... you suprise me again .. you must have all the records Smiley. I am now trying to figure out the short forms given ... I assume wd = widow / da = daughter of / so = son of / wi = wife of ... but I am not sure on sp.
I have one will ... for a William Stephenson of Doncaster, Coachmaker ... with his executors William Morley, timbermerchant and John Scott painter swaring oath on Jan 23 1807. I assume this would be the last entry you have ... Stevenson William? coachmaker 16 Aug 1806 50 decline. And while you have it as Stevenson in the burial records it is Stephenson in his will. This is the hard part about a name that can be spelt two ways.
Although I have not proved it 100% ... I believe the William who died in 1806 ... is my ggggg .... An I had wondered if he might have been born else where than Doncaster ... BUT, I see that the name goes well back into the 1600 - 1500's ... but wether they are all my family I do not know.

Oly ... Thanks .. Thanks again. Smiley Smiley Smiley I have been working on my Stephensons ... very slowly for 25 years or so.
The best guess I have is that it goes back to a William Stephenson, (died 1806) coachmaker of Doncaster who married a Susanna Lawrence (Laurance?) at Sprotbrough in 1779.
Back in 1985 I wrote to the Doncaster Archives King Edward Road Balby, Doncaster ... and in a search they did in the St George parish records ... they gave me " William and Sussanna married Sprotborough 1779 ...  children to them  born St George, Doncaster ... bapt 12 Nov 1780: Robert / 18 Sept 1782: William / 15 Aug 1784: John (this John died Jan 1785) / 25 Dec 1785: Ann (died May 1792) / 10 Dec  1788: Nancy (died May 1795) / 27 Mar 1791: Elizabeth /  26 May 1793: Mary Ann (died Oct 1798) / 30 Jul  1797: Harriet (fourth dau) (died Dec 22 1818) / 23 Jun 1799: John (third son)
Prior to baptism of Nancy the father is described as a wheelwright ... but from Nancy on he is called a coachmaker.
SO ... of all those children possibly only 4 made it to adults ... that is a high mortality rate !! Cry

I believe I am decended from the William bapt Sept 18 1782 ... if I have it right he married Alice Carter at Cantley in 1811. Some years ago another searcher found ... what she called 'Marriage Bonds & Allegations 1811 ......... "Allegation: 19 Jan 1811 On which day appeared personally William Stephenson of Doncaster in the diocese of York, Coachmaker & made oath that he was 27 years old & upwards & a Bachelor & intendeth to marry Alice Carter of Branton in the parish of Cantley in the diocese of York aged 22 years & upwards & a Spiinster in the parish church of Cantley in which said parish the said Alice Carter hath had her usual abode for the space of four weeks last past. Signed Willm Stevenson, Sworn before Thomas Wetherhead, Surrogate"
"Bond: Know all men by these present that we William Stephenson of Doncaster in the county of York, Coachmaker & John Taylor of the said parish Joiner are bound by the sum of 200 (UK lbs) 19 Jan 1811. William Stephenson & Alice Carter are now licenced to marry. Signed Willm Stevenson & John Taylor Sworn by Thomas Wetherhead."
Also from Ancestry ...." Willm Stevenson of Doncaster and Alice Carter , by licence 21st Jan, 1811, by W W Childers, Vicar. Witnesses John Taylor, M Hattersley, William Sayle."
QUESTION: Have you ever seen ages given this way .... I.E.  "27 years & upwards" Does this mean he had, had his 27th birthday but was not yet 28??

As far as 1st son of Robert and Ann ... I have it as June 16, 1805 George .... 1st s of Robt Stevenson and Ann Moody .... Coachman
And for the marriage of William and Susannah Laurence ... I believe the bands were read at Doncaster ... but the marriage took place in 1779 at Sprotbrough ... west of Doncaster. I am not sure what the Sprotbrough records stated..... if there was much info. given here or not.

I am not realy sure on the right spelling of _Laurence_. but believe the Baptism is .. christening: Doncaster 1758 Aug 27 Susanna daughter of Wm Laurence.

Yes that's what my index gives, looking at old records of the area they are all Laurence, From what I can see Lawrence comes in after 1800.
Susannah made her mark so the spelling is in the hands of whoever made out the register for her wedding and baptism.

Below a bit from a book of Doncaster Area Marriages

CARTER
ALICE   William   Stevenson   21 Jan 1811    Cantley    L
ANN [W]   Charles   Hatfield   13 May 1802    Warmsworth    L
ANN   Matthew   Marsden   19 Sep 1816    Cantley    L

Regards ages query earlier, a person of 26 is in his 27th year So 27 and upwards would be after his 27th birthday in his 28th year.

Well you see ... the reason I am really trying to uderstand the giving of ages is ..... I think I'm on the right William, who is getting married to Alice Carter ... and he seems to have gave his age on Jan 19. 1811 as 27 years old and upwards ... but if I am right and the baptism of William .. son of another William (wheelmaker) at Doncaster on Sept 18th 1782 ... IS ALSO HIM ... then the 1811 record verses the 1782 christining seem to be out one year. In my mind, a man who was 27 in Jan 1811 ... would be born in 1883 ... making the Sept 1782 bapt. record ... one year to early .... HELP.  Undecided
