I'm after some more help please?
I've hit yet another brick wall, I'm looking for the Birth/Baptism record of my GG Grandmother Mary Ann Loates (Loats or Lotes). I've at last found my GG Grandfathers Baptism record on the "Freereg" Site, many thanks to Berlin-Bob for that lead, but I can't find Marys on any site. I've tried all the main sites, the IGI Index , Genes Reunited and many others.
The Census records have her as born in St Andrew the Less in Cambridge around 1853 to 1859 but, her wedding certificate shows her age as 19 in 1872 i.e. 1853. I've ordered the most likely candidate from the GRO but that gives her father as Robert!!!!
Her wedding certificate gives her father as John Loats (Loates) and the only census record that would give a better idea, the 1861 census doesn't exist!
There is however, one possibility on the Parish Record Collection that fits both the Fathers name and the general address but, it would mean that she was 14 when she got married which, although not impossible seems a little far fetched and also, she lied about her age to the registrar and their first child was born in the April-June quarter of the following year (there may have been a shotgun involved!)
Has anybody out there got any ideas where I could look next?
David

Hi,
Sorry but I found this baptism for Reeve Mary Ann, I don't think she's 'yours',
Reeve Marianne LOTES Place: Cambridge, St Andrew the Less 18 Dec 1853 Father: William LOTES, dealer Mother: Frances Abode: of Staffordshire Pl
As Mary and her family are in Gas Lane in 1851 and in 1861, transcribed on Ancestry in 1861 as SOATES.
1861 RG9/1024 f.20 p.34 Cambridge St Andrew The Less 42 Gas Lane John ?OATES Head M 32 Lab Elizabeth Wife M 35 James Son 16 Lab John Son 14 Lab Elizabeth Daur 12 Scholar Hannah Daur 10 Scholar Mary Ann Daur 6 Scholar All born Cambridge
I wonder if she had a childhood baptism,
Mary Ann LOATES 12 Jun 1859 Cambridge, St Andrew the Less Father: John LOATES, lab Mother: Elizabeth Abode: of Gas Lane
Possible for James,
James LOATS 12 Jul 1846 Cambridge, St Andrew the Less Father: John LOATES, lab Mother: Elizabeth Abode: of Bradmore Street
Is this the birth cert you have already, transcribed at Ancestry as LOTENS.
Mary Ann LOTES Mar Q 1855 Cambridge 3b 347
This would make her 6 for the 1861 census.
Regards Daisy

Hi all .....
Good find Daisy so sadly that rules mine out.
William Loates married Frances Reeve/ Reeves 1852 Cam.
The one Daisy found is indexed as Lotens looks Lotes on the original.

Hi, There is no need for your head to hurt !! I am probably the last Loates standing in Cambridgeshire and have been 'doing' the family history for some time and also that of the other Loates/Loats families in the shire. The majority, if not all, the Loates names around the globe today have their roots in Cambridgeshire. 1) Mary Ann Loates, christened St Andrew the Less in Cambridge on September 26th 1838 'dau of Robert & Rebecca, New St, Bricklayer'. They never registered the birth so there is no birth certificate. She was actually illegitimate as Robert Loats (without the 'e') didn't marry her mother, a widow called Rebekah Johnson until March 21st 1841.
2) Mary Ann Lotes (without the 'a') was born on January 4th 1855, but not christened until June 12th 1859 at St Andrews the Less. There her name was written as Mary Ann Loates (with the 'a'). She was the daughter of John Loat(e)s and Elizabeth Johnson.
3) Reeve Mary Ann Loat(e)s, born June 25th 1853 was the daughter of William Loates and Frances Reeve. They emigrated to Australia but returned in 1860. Reeve Mary Ann died on board and was buried at sea.
The family can be traced back to a John Loughts living at Fen Ditton at the end of the 17th century. His son was christened as Francis Louts, married as Francis Loats and buried as Francis Lotes !!!!
Would love to hear from you - contact me on (*) (if its allowed on this site !!!. Cheers
Wouls be glad to hear from you.

"Loates"
Thanks for that, my Mary is No 2 on your list, I've since found har birth certificate which matches what you've given above.
It's her husband Joseph Death and the rest of his family that I'm more interested in at the moment, as I'm struggling to find any connection with his father Charles.
I have Mary's parents as John and Elizabeth (Johnson) and John's parents as Robert and Susanna (?) am I going along the right line?
If you need to contact me follow the instructions on the help page as you can't e-mail people direct for security reasons.

Hi David, Something happened then so you may get two Emils. You are on the right track. John married Elizabeth Johnson on Xmas Day 1843.
John was christened on March 28th 1824 in the old St Andrew the Less church in Cambridge - sometimes called the 'Abbey Church'. John Loats 'son of Robert & Susanna, Cambridge Place'.
His mother, Susanna Gunton, most likely died in, or shortly after childbirth, as she was buried on the same day. Susanna Loats ' wife of Robert, Cambridge Place, 23'.
Robert was born in 1801, the illegitimate son of Mary Loots/Loates. His sister Rebecca was also illegitimate, born 1804, She is my third great grandmother.
Robert was married three times, his name was spelled three different ways and he has two death certificates - the person who registered his passing did it in two different register offices as she wasn't sure which district he lived in !! His death date was guesswork as, according to the parish register, he was buried before he died !!!! Now that was a headache !!!
I have a shed load of transcribed parish registers so if you need anything let me know. I'll have a look at Mister Death to see what I have. Anything specific
Cheers Andy Loates
