Anyone researching the Sharpe family that ran Sharpe's Pottery in Swadlincote in the early nineteenth century?
I am trying to find out if there is any link between my Sharpe family, who sold pots, and the Sharpes of swadlincote. Mine came from packington, and Ashby nearby.

The Local Studies Library closest to Swadlincote may be able to help. Why not email them and ask?

Thanks Sylvia.
I did contact them some time back at the address you give. They referred me to The Magic Attic Archive, attached to the museum. I got a letter back from The Magic Attic. The letter was from a descendant himself of a Sharp, from Measham, but apart from giving a few pointers to the family that had the pottery, not much else. He didn't suggest any link. Swadlincote is a bit out of my way, and I haven't been able to get up there myself to visit the museum. Although, I didn't get a feeling from the letter, that doing so might help me much.
I was writing this as I got your message Charlotte, and I'll look into that one. Hoping they don't just refer me back to the Magic Attic, that is.

yep, that's what I found, but I can't tie in the Thomas Sharpe who founded the company with my (prior generation?) Thomas Sharpe from Packington, who married Hannah Tebbet 1801, Measham, having children from 1802 to 1813 in Packington.
I've e-mailed both sources suggested, - Magic Attic again - see if new documents, digitalisation etc may help by having thrown up new leads.
The thing is that the family of Edmund Sharpe come from Hartshorne, mine from Measham / Packington, and I can't see the link. If there is one.
I know that William ( in your 1851 find, Sylvia, the father, ) and his brother Thomas bought the land called "Cow Pastures" in Swadlincote, in the 1820s off their landlord, Charles Bullivant, after his bankruptcy.
There isn't much distance between Packington and Swadlincote in space, but a lot in unknown genealogy.

Hi again Terry, When you contact the Local Studies Library why not tell them that you have been in touch with the Magic Attic? That will have two benefits- it will stop them passing you along to the Attic again , and it will also show you have done some hom, ework yourself.
I've always found these Libraries very helpful.

I have just had the following reply from the Magic Attic:
"Dear Terry,
The Thomas Sharpe of Measham was in my opinion no relation to the Sharpe family of the pottery.
The pottery Sharpes were originally from Worthingon in Leicestershire. William Sharpe came to Swadlincote/Hartshorne and was a farmer.
Thomas Sharpe was William's eldest son and bought the area of the pottery (with his father) from the estate of Fletcher Bullivant who was declared bankrupt in about 1818. Sharpe's Pottery was established in 1821.
The picture that you sent me bears no resemblance to the wares of Sharpe's which were mostly yellow ware. I think you and your family are correct in your assumption.
I doubt if anyone could positively identify where this teapot would be made. The "experts" on the various antique shows would probably say it was made in Staffordshire which seems to be the standard answer when they are stumped!
Sorry I cannot be of any more help.
My original message was "> I wrote to you some time ago about my ancesrtral family, who were > hawkers in Hilmorton. > You kindly sent me back a letter detailing some of the history of the > Sharpes of Sharpe's pottery, > but I haven't progressed very far, since then. > > My ancestor, if you don't have it on file still,.was a Thomas Sharpe ( > pot carrier) who married perhaps Hannah Tebbit > in Measham in 1801, and whose daughter, Hannah, married my 3x gt > grandfather Joseph Kirby in Packington in 1830. > > They moved to Hilmorton, which is on the Canal, and I have been > toying with a theory that pots shipped down from Derbyshire, > may have been their supply, and could there be a link to Sharpe's > Pottery, through my ancestor Thomas Sharpe? > > I can't see one geneologically, with the resources at my disposal. > > I have a photo of one of the pots they sold.
